Heavily influenced by his idol, Elvis Presley, and the 1950s rock revolution, he is also known as the most famous dancer of the Hula hoop fad. For the last 40 years he has retained his popularity in Italy, selling millions of records and appearing in numerous TV shows and movies (including a short appearance in Fellini's La Dolce Vita, before becoming a famous artist). In the latter respect, he has also been a creator of a comic genre, with his characteristic walking and his facial expressions. For the most part, his films were commercially successful, in fact in the 1970s and part of the 1980s, he was the king of the Italian box office in low budget movies. As an actor, critics point to Serafino (1968), directed by Pietro Germi, as his best effort.
As a director he frequently casts Ornella Muti, Eleonora Giorgi and his wife Claudia Mori. His best movie like director is "Yuppi Du", winner of The Golden Palm at Cannes Festival. He and Claudia are the parents of Rosita, Rosalinda and Vincent Celentano, the latter most notable to worldwide audiences for playing the Satan character in Mel Gibson`s The Passion of the Christ. He also works often as a host for several Italian television shows.
His 1968 song "Azzurro" has regained popularity in 2006, due to it being the anthem of the Italian national football team (the Azzurri) who won the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The artist Vincent Fiorello has also created a remix of the song.
His last concert-event in 2012, after 18 years without live performances, was transmitted on Canale 5, with over 9 million viewers both evenings.

Quegli occhi buoni su di me
Capelli grigi di lei mia madre
Preoccupata come lui
E tu che eri una bambina
Innamorata sempre più
Appiccicata, qui vicina sempre tu
Sorridente coi tuoi suoi
Lo sfondo verde laggiù dei prati
E quei papaveri che ormai
Sono appassiti come noi negli anni
Ci siamo persi; come mai
E le tue corse incontro al mondo
A quella vita che vorrei
Aver vissuto ma che poi come sai
Non abbiam vissuto mai
Marì Marì Marì Marì
Ancora e ancora tu sei qui
Dov'è la tua serenità
Mi manca mi manca
Ho un vuoto qua
Il tempo scorre e se ne va
Vorrei saper che senso ha
Perchè perchè
Si vede quello che
Hai amato e più non c'è
I muri bianchi di questa stanza
Sono uno schermo intorno a me
Io ti rivedo lì con lei mia madre
Che cucinava insieme a te.
Tu mi guardavi una bambina
Innamorata sempre più
Appiccicata qui vicina sempre tu
Sorridente coi tuoi sì
Marì Marì Marì Marì
Ancora e ancora tu sei qui
Dov'è la tua serenità
Mi manca mi manca
Ho un vuoto qua
Il tempo scorre e se ne va
Vorrei saper che senso ha
Perchè perchè
Si vede quello che
Hai amato e più non c'è
The lyrics of Adriano Celentano's song "Marì Marì" reflect on the passing of time and the nostalgic memories of the past. The first stanza talks about the tired wrinkles of the singer's father, his mother's gray hair, and their worried expressions. He remembers a girl, who was always nearby and smiling, maybe an old childhood friend, and speculates on what happened to her. The second stanza describes a green background of the meadows and poppies and how it has changed over the years, just like they have. The girl, who was once so full of life, has had her own experiences, which he envies, but they have lost touch with each other.
The chorus brings up the name "Marì Marì," which could be the nickname for the girl or just an expression of longing. The singer wonders where her serenity is and how he misses her. The bridge about white walls surrounding him suggests that he is now alone and in a confined space, where he can only reminisce about his loved ones, the companionship of Marì Marì, and the memories of his childhood. The final chorus repeats the theme of time passing and his unanswered questions about what happened to his past.

nunca hemos vivido

una y otra vez estás aquí
¿Dónde está tu serenidad?
Lo extraño, lo extraño
Tengo un vacío aquí
el tiempo pasa y desaparece
Me gustaría saber qué tiene sentido
¿por qué?
ves lo que
que amó y cuanto más no hay
Las paredes blancas de esta sala
son una pantalla a mi alrededor
yo te veo allí con ella mi madre
que solía cocinar contigo
Me estabas mirando a una niñita
en el amor cada vez más
pegajoso cerca aquí siempre que
sonriendo con el tuyo sí
Marì Marì Marì Marì
una y otra vez estás aquí
¿Dónde está tu serenidad?
Lo extraño, lo extraño
Tengo un vacío aquí
el tiempo pasa y desaparece
Me gustaría saber qué tiene sentido
¿por qué?
ves lo que
