Pink
Aerosmith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pink, it's my new obsession, yeah
Pink, it's not even a question
Pink on the lips of your lover (ooh)
'Cause pink is the love you discover

Pink as the bing on your cherry
Pink, 'cause you are so very
Pink, it's the color of passion
'Cause today it just goes with the fashion

Pink, it was love at first sight
Yeah, pink, when I turn out the light
And pink gets me high as a kite
And I think everything is going to be alright
No matter what we do tonight

You could be my flamingo
'Cause pink is the new kinda lingo
Pink, like a deco umbrella
It's kink, but you don't ever tell her

Pink, it was love at first sight
Yeah, and pink when I turn out the light
Yeah, pink gets me high as a kite
And I think everything is going to be alright
No matter what we do tonight

Yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah

I want to be your lover
I, I wanna wrap you in rubber
As pink as the sheets that we lay on
'Cause pink, it's my favorite crayon, yeah

Pink, it was love at first sight
Yeah, pink when I turn out the light
Yeah, pink, it's like red but not quite

And I think everything is going to be alright
No matter what we do tonight

Overall Meaning

Aerosmith's song "Pink" is an ode to the color pink and all that it represents. The lyrics suggest that the color pink is a symbol of love, passion, and fashion. The singer sings about how his obsession with the color has led him to see it everywhere, from the lips of his lover, to the bing on his cherry, to the sheets that he lays on. He also expresses that pink makes him feel high as a kite and optimistic that everything is going to be alright, no matter what they do tonight.

The song starts with the line "Pink, it's my new obsession," which sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is clearly infatuated with the color and sees it as something that can bring joy and excitement into his life. He also suggests that pink is a symbol of passion, which is why it is so important to him. The color is a reflection of the intensity of his feelings, whether it is love or lust.

The chorus is the most memorable part of the song, with lines like "Pink, when I turn out the light" and "Pink is my favorite crayon." These lines show how the color has become a part of his life, not just as a passing trend but as something that he truly loves. The song ends with the singer proclaiming that he wants to be his lover's flamingo, indicating that he wants to be a symbol of joy and love in her life.

These are legitimately very interesting chords for a late-90s pop/rock song.
It's masterful how much modulation Glen Ballard & Richie Supa put into their writing, and the way the band worked over the song-structure that was written for them.

The main part is very straightforward Gdominant Dorian-based progression (Gdom FMaj Cdom Ddom), but the chorus bridge (Em Adom modulating to CMaj then modulating AGAIN to the EbMaj > Fdom walk-up to Gdom) is super effective in its building.

The guitar lead bridge is even more interesting with the constant key changes:
It begins with a slight twist on the main progression (now just Gdom FMaj Cdom) then modulating up a minor-3rd (same progression but starts on Bbdom instead) and then modulating up AGAIN a full-step (same progression but starts on Cdom) and THEN drops back down a minor 3rd to perfectly land on the V chord of the main progression!!!! (The Ddom that was left out in the "slight twist on the main progression")

Talk about full circle songwriting. Much respect to Ballard, Supa, and the band.
