All or Nothing
Against Me! Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We can have a day from here,
if you'll take your heart put some faith in ideals.
The bank line will all turn around and rent will pay
itself. You can sleep tonight,
little boys in sweat-shops will again be children and
tonight they'll eat the lions share.
Bombing skies will sing silent and the anger turn to
laughter. On the crucifix Christ will turn his head
and admit his own sin he was a martyr for.
Your shoulders just as heavy there is no mercy from
three holes and a bleeding forehead helping my life.
Rob the promise and direction given to me.
We're bound to self righteous living.
Fingers rapping on the counter,
patience wearing thin. It's just another work week,
arthritis at 18 for a minimum living.
Who has time to breathe, catch it before it's over,
catch it before it eats you.
Hello perspective this is just the human condition.
It's universal love my god I think it's spreading.
They'll kick you when you're down.
Push you down when you're stumbling.
Another day of dying is just evolution.
You said freedom was a hope away an hand or a hard
push. Is this inclusive thinking?
We run by a thread, tongue in cheek idealists.

I'm not giving up the claim that I can save the world
and all I need is my friends.

Overall Meaning

In "All or Nothing," singer Laura Jane Grace expresses a desire for a better world and a better life, one where she can have hope in the face of the struggle and where idealism is a reality. The lyrics describe a world where everyone can have a day to remember if they just put their hearts into ideals and have faith in something greater. In this world, the bank line will turn around and rent will pay itself, allowing everyone to sleep in peace. Even the sweatshop children will once again be allowed to be children, eating the lion's share, and the bombing skies will turn to silent song, with anger turning into laughter.

Despite the heavy weight of the world on her shoulders, Grace still believes in the power of human connection, even in the face of adversity. She talks about how the promise and direction he was given in life have been robbed from her, but that there is still hope in the human condition. With a tongue-in-cheek idealism, the song ends with Grace declaring that she's not giving up on her desire to save the world, so long as she has her friends.

Overall, "All or Nothing" is a song about hope in the face of adversity, about idealism and the power of believing in something greater, even when the world seems to be against you.

The first against me song that I was ever exposed to. My uncle was playing it when I was a freshman in his. He went on to be heavily addicted to drugs and we lost touch. I spent almost three years searching for this song, and I’m so glad I did. Ten years down the road this is the only connection I have to my uncle, who is now wandering the streets of SF in search of heroin. This song has changed my life in so many ways I wish I could thank Tom personally for this and vivid a vis in its entirety. Oops I mean laura

"I'm not giving up on the claim that I can save the world, and all I need is my friends" Used to listen to this E.P. and Vivida Vis over and over again back in the day. I remember that after Reinventing Axl Rose came out, I started working my way back through Toms early demo recordings and coming across this and that cassette comp Tom featured on with Crasshole Records. Haven't had a musical journey that's rivaled it since.
