Cavalier Eternel
Against Me! Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Girl, I'm sorry but I'm leaving
We're both at fault, we're both to blame
And it wasn't the other men, cause there were other women
This just isn't love, it's just the remorse of a loss of a feeling
Even if I stayed, it just wouldn't be the same

Double this drink up into the tallest glass you've got
You know that I ain't used to sleeping all alone
Gonna make it to the moon tonight on a one-way kamikaze flight
If I could get so high, I'd leave behind my problems
And take them out with the empty bottles

Oh girl, I'm sorry but I'm leaving
We're both at fault, we're both to blame
And it wasn't the other men, cause there were other women
This just isn't love, it's just the remorse of a loss of a feeling
Even if I stayed, it just wouldn't be the same

Me and this guitar are going swinging blind into the unknown
You know a song and a stage is all I ever needed of a home
Someday I will call from a pay phone in a truck stop on the road
And you'll tell me how much better off you've been on your own

So girl, I'm sorry but I'm leaving
We're both at fault, we're both to blame
And it wasn't the other men, cause there were other women

This just isn't love, it's just the remorse of a loss of a feeling
Even if I stayed, it just wouldn't be the same

Overall Meaning

The song "Cavalier Eternal" by Against Me! is a reflection on a failed relationship. The singer acknowledges that both parties are to blame for the demise of their love. The lyrics suggest that infidelity was a contributing factor, but ultimately, it was the loss of a shared feeling that led to the breakup. The singer points out that even if they stayed together, they would not be able to recapture what they once had.

The singer seems to be coping with the breakup by using alcohol and drugs to numb the pain. They encourage their partner to double up their drink and go on a reckless "kamikaze flight" to escape reality. The singer also finds solace in music, referring to their guitar as a companion and a source of stability.

The song's chorus repeats the sentiment that both parties are at fault for the failed relationship, and there were other women and men involved. Ultimately, the singer acknowledges that leaving is for the best, even if it's painful. The final verse leaves the possibility of reconciliation open, but it's unsure if it will ever come to fruition.

Overall, "Cavalier Eternal" is a poignant exploration of a failed relationship, the reasons behind it, and the emotional aftermath.

I remember being backstage at an Against Me concert in Eugene, Oregon. This is 2007...red cups everywhere. We drank as many as we could before getting yelled at and being told to go away. We weren't supposed to be backstage haha. Amazing live. Crazy to be 31 now, listening to this. Still love it.

A person realizing their relationship with someone else is only causing each pain and that it would be better to move on, envisioning a future in which they can both look back and agree that parting ways was the correct thing to do, is a more beautiful story than any romance in which the supposed lovers stay together against the odds, as that seldom happens in the real world without creating a hurtful, unhealthy relationship: a sort of tragedy.

It's the reason so many couples grow to despise their marriages after a few years, because they believe the failure is in ending a marriage and not in continuing a loveless marriage that harms all parties involved.

Marriage, romantic relationships, these should only last as long as love does. There's no shame in moving on, and any person who says otherwise is trying to control you.

Summed up why I have always loved this song. Such beauty in having the maturity to part ways respectfully. Most things aren’t meant to last. Observer each other’s boundaries and boldly communicate your needs.
