Cliche Guevara
Against Me! Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The last threats came and went, this is the way that wars are played.
Always heading for a front, heading for a front,
We go into the obscurity of an easy to pass on feeling that objection is so cliche.
A new way on
A new way on
A new way on
A new way on
Turn gunshots and mortar blasts into a metaphor of how we are all the same.
Well there's a lot of things that should be said, so we're hammering six strings,
Machine gun in audible voices, this is the party we came for.
A new way on
A new way on
A new way on
A new way
We stand in amazement of motion in a world that is constantly revolving.
With plans of invasion and arms races racing we rock to the new sensation.
A new way on
A new way on
A new way on
A new way
In "Cliché Guevara," Against Me! seems to be calling out the war propaganda that's so pervasive in our society -- and pointing out how easy it is to fall into that trap. "We'll keep ourselves in a place where it's easy to hold onto," they sing, suggesting that we might be clinging to an idea of what's right and wrong rather than examining the issues more closely. They go on to say that "this is the way that wars are played," which could be interpreted as a cynical commentary on how, for some, war is just another game to be won.
The chorus is where things really get interesting. Against Me! sings, "A new way on, a new way on, a new way on, a new way." This repetition of the phrase "a new way on" could be seen as a call for change, a desire to break out of old patterns of behavior and find fresh solutions to complex problems. By asking for "pop sensibilities" to "sing me the end of the world," they're also hinting at the power of music to spread messages of hope, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Finally, with the lines "We stand in amazement of motion in a world that is constantly revolving / With plans of invasion and arms races racing we rock to the new sensation," Against Me! seems to be saying that, even though the world might be constantly spinning out of control, there's still something joyful to be found in the music that helps us cope.
