Understanding
Aidan Hawken Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Little darling, why'd you get into this mess
you're just an accident waiting to happen
i guess you always put our love to the test
look baby, you always escape with such ease
that said you come and go as you please
not sure what to believe

you're lucky i'm so understanding
you're lucky i'm so undemanding
you could run around with any man you want
and i act like i'm satisfied
but i'm bleeding on the inside, you know

watch baby, watch me climb out of this hole
i see you laughing but i think it's all just for show
you cheat and lie, it's easy
anything goes

little darling how did i get into this mess
i never know what's real or what's part of the test
i'm just a sucker open-hearted, i guess

but you know
you're lucky i'm so understanding
you're lucky i'm so undemanding
you could run around with any man you want
and i act like i am satisfied
but i'm bleeding on the inside, you know

my love
my love
i act like i am satisfied
but i'm bleeding on the inside of love

someday you'll fall
but you know i'm always here to pick you up when you fall
i'll be at your side
look you straight in the eyes tell you i'm the one

well
someday you'll fall
but you know i'm always here to pick you up when you fall
i'll be at your side
look you straight in the eyes tell you i'm the one

(repeat till fade...)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Aidan Hawken's song "Understanding" communicate a sense of frustration and pain that arises from being in a relationship with someone who repeatedly hurts you. The opening line "Little darling, why'd you get into this mess" implies that the singer's partner is responsible for the problems in their relationship, but the use of the term "little darling" suggests that they still care for them deeply. The second line "you're just an accident waiting to happen" further emphasizes this feeling of impending doom, indicating that the singer fears that their partner will continue to make choices that put them both in danger. The lines "you always escape with such ease / not sure what to believe" suggest that the singer doesn't understand how their partner can hurt them so much yet still manage to charm their way out of trouble.

Despite this frustration, the singer repeatedly asserts that they are "lucky [they're] so understanding" and "so undemanding." This suggests that they are willing to tolerate their partner's bad behavior because they love them so much. The lines "you could run around with any man you want / and i act like i'm satisfied / but i'm bleeding on the inside, you know" encapsulates this feeling of being stuck in a difficult situation where the singer feels like they have no choice but to put up with their partner's infidelity. The chorus repeats this sentiment, emphasizing the contrast between the singer's calm exterior and their inner turmoil.

In the final verse, the singer acknowledges that their partner is likely to fall again, but that they will be there to pick them up. This suggests that the singer is willing to forgive their partner and start again, despite the pain they have caused.

Overall, "Understanding" is a song about the difficulties of loving someone who repeatedly hurts you. It captures the conflicting emotions of frustration, anger, and love that can arise from this situation, and suggests that sometimes forgiveness is the only way forward.

This show had changed me. I love more deeply now because of Elena Gilbert's compassion. I believe in redemption because of Damon's transition. I believe in forgiveness and transformation because of Stefan. I believe in the power of manipulation, for better or worse, because of Katherine. I believe we find what we need because Alaric got the kids he always wanted with Elena and Jeremy.

Are u from family of Gilbert's
Do u hunt vampires?

On my 1 year anniversary, my girlfriend walked into a candle-lit hotel room overlooking the lake, with rose petals along the pathway to the bed, with this song playing in the background. That beating drum intro as she entered the room--it was perfect. I never told her the song was about an argument, lol.

Update 10 years later: She doesn't remember this was the song that played, but she tears up everytime she hears it. We are now married with our first child on the way!

Their is faith
And it has enormous amount of power that can turn you from someone to other
I don't mean human to angel
But form weak frail bad human to angel human or vice versa
Trust me I have seen this with my own eyes
