Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Akiyo’s song Joé speak to the struggles and challenges faced by Joé, a young man who is growing up in a difficult environment. The song begins by acknowledging that Joé’s mother is a devout Christian, and that Joé’s life is like being in school without a teacher. Despite this, Joé’s parents have not neglected him and have not abandoned him, recognizing that Joé has always been hardworking and well-behaved. The song suggests that perhaps they should have played with him more when he was younger, but today Joé is paying them back by doing well for himself. Even though his life has been tough, he has the support of his family.

The second part of the song touches on some of the hardships that Joé has faced over the years. He is referred to as an “ex-convict” who was wrongly imprisoned for five years two months and six days, and had to suffer the indignity of being treated like an animal in jail. Despite this, Joé is still held up as being someone who deserves respect and admiration. Throughout the song, the message is clear that Joé should not be judged for his past and that he is still worthy of love and care, as the whole family has rallied behind him.
