Winter Wonderland
Al Jarreau Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sleigh bells ring
Are you listening?
In the lane
Snow is glistening
A beautiful sight
We're happy tonight
Walking
In a winter wonderland

Gone away
Is the bluebird
Here to stay
Is a new bird
He sings a love song
As we go along
Walking
In a winter wonderland

In the meadow
We can build a snowman
And pretend
That he is Parson Brown
He'll say are you married?
We'll say No man
But you can do the job
When you're in town

Later on, we'll conspire
As we dream, by the fire
To face unafraid
The plans that we've made
Walking
In a winter wonderland

In the meadow
We can build a snowman
And pretend
That he's a circus clown
We'll have lots of fun
With Mr. Snowman
Until the other kids
Come knock him down

When it's cold
Ain't it thrilling
When your nose
Gets to chilling
We'll frolic and play
The Eskimo way
Walking
In a winter wonderland

Walking
In a winter wonderland

Overall Meaning

The song Winter Wonderland by Al Jarreau is a classic Christmas tune that describes the wonder, excitement and joy that come with the winter season. In the opening lines, the singer paints a picture of an idyllic winter scene, where the sound of sleigh bells complement the glistening snow in the lane. The song suggests that there is something magical about the winter season, and that it inspires happy thoughts and feelings in people. The scene highlights the simplicity of walking in the snow, but also illuminates the beauty that can be found in the winter season if only we pay attention.

In the next verse, the singer talks about the change in seasons where the bluebird of happiness is gone, and a new bird sings a love song. The imagery in the verse suggests that despite the challenges that winter poses, it is a season that inspires new beginnings for those who allow themselves to immerse into it. The final verse describes the pleasures that can be derived from building a snowman and enjoying some time in the company of friends. The song highlights the fun activities that come with winter, from playing games to enjoying the snow. I believe that this is the best version of Winter Wonderland that I have ever heard. There's an unquantifiable quality to Al's rendition which, for me, seems to 'fold' time back over itself as I can recall each Christmas since my earliest memory in a stream of pleasant memories as I listen to Al sing.

TralfazConstruction
