Poor Unfortunate Souls
Alan Menken & Howard Ashman Lyrics

The only way to get what you want is to become a human yourself
Can you do that?

My dear, sweet child, that's what I do
It's what I live for
To help unfortunate merfolk like yourself
Poor souls with no one else to turn to
I admit that in the past I've been a nasty
They weren't kidding when they called me, well, a witch
But you'll find that nowadays
I've mended all my ways
Repented, seen the light, and made a switch
To this
And I fortunately know a little magic
It's a talent that I always have possessed
And dear lady, please don't laugh
I use it on behalf
Of the miserable, the lonely, and depressed (Pathetic)

Poor unfortunate souls
In pain, in need
This one longing to be thinner
That one wants to get the girl
And do I help them?
Yes, indeed
Those poor unfortunate souls
So sad, so true
They come flocking to my cauldron
Crying, "Spells, Ursula, please!"
And I help them
Yes I do

Now it's happened once or twice
Someone couldn't pay the price
And I'm afraid I had to rake 'em 'cross the coals
Yes I've had the odd complaint
But on the whole I've been a saint
To those poor unfortunate souls

Have we got a deal?
If I become human, I'll never be with my father or sisters again
But you'll have your man
Life's full of tough choices, isn't it?
Oh, and there is one more thing
We haven't discussed the subject of payment
But I don't have-
I'm not asking much, just a token really, a trifle
What I want from you is your voice
But without my voice, how can I-
You'll have your looks, your pretty face
And don't underestimate the importance of body language, ha!

The men up there don't like a lot of blabber
They think a girl who gossips is a bore
Yet on land it's much preferred for ladies not to say a word
And after all dear, what is idle babble for?
Come on, they're not all that impressed with conversation
True gentlemen avoid it when they can
But they dote and swoon and fawn
On a lady who's withdrawn
It's she who holds her tongue who gets a man

Come on you poor unfortunate soul
Go ahead
Make your choice
I'm a very busy woman and I haven't got all day
It won't cost much
Just your voice!
You poor unfortunate soul
It's sad but true
If you want to cross the bridge, my sweet
You've got the pay the toll
Take a gulp and take a breath
And go ahead and sign the scroll
Flotsam, Jetsam, now I've got her, boys
The boss is on a roll
This poor unfortunate soul

Beluga sevruga
Come winds of the Caspian Sea
Larengix glaucitis
Et max laryngitis
La voce to me

Now, sing
Aa-aa-aah, a-aa-aah

Keep singing!
Aa-aa-aah, a-aa-aah

Overall Meaning

The song "Poor Unfortunate Souls" is performed by the sea witch Ursula, who is trying to convince Ariel, the Little Mermaid, to give up her voice in exchange for becoming a human and winning the love of Prince Eric. Ursula portrays herself as someone who can offer help to "poor souls with no one else to turn to." Ursula admits that she was once a "nasty witch", but has turned over a new leaf and now uses her magical talent to help the miserable, lonely, and depressed. She sings about how humans care more about body language than conversation, and Ariel could win over Prince Eric by being withdrawn.

Ursula asks Ariel to sign a contract that will make her human, but in return, she will have to give up her voice. Ursula goes on to tell Ariel that the price required to become human involves paying a toll, and this goes beyond signing a contract. She then proceeds to use magic to transform Ariel's tail into legs and provide her with a two-day time limit to win Prince Eric's love, or else she will become Ursula's property.

Overall, the song highlights Ursula's manipulation of Ariel and her attempts to take advantage of her vulnerability. The song's dark themes and villainous lyrics make it a standout in the Disney musical canon.

How could he express every emotions in every song so vividly? He is totally genius, a real actor, and amazing director.

@Rhianna Barr-Beaumont So sad

PaperShadow

You REALLY see it in songs like "Part of Your World", or "The Mob Song" in Beauty & The Beast. Look at those lyrics or the singing direction through the lens of Ashman: a Gay Man afflicted with AIDS, arguably two of the most feared/demonized/poorly understood circumstances of the era in which he grew up, lived, and did his work.

Howard worked very closely with the singers for several of his works and you can hear major elements of what defined the final versions in the self-performed demos. A lot of those songs were written and performed from a shared emotional experience channeled into the fiction, and it makes them arguably the most vital part of the Disney iteration of those stories.

FOR HOWARD who gave a mermaid her voice, a beast his soul, and a genie his freedom

.

Eric Burns

Very well said, couldn't have said it any better.

Xavier Spriggs

Ya know, that shoulda been included at the end of the credits of Aladdin.

Brian Runyon

Very well done. Sounds like Tim Curry in the singing. RIP, Howard. To the man who gave a mermaid her voice, and a beast his soul.

Arthur Kohn

And don’t forget he gave the genie his freedom

Remember the Magic

The amazing thing is, he ISN'T truly singing, more musically talking if you get what I mean. But he puts so much EMOTION and feeling into it that's it's pure perfection.

Claudia Siefer

an EXCELLENt point. He is not singing . It's "Sprechstimme ". Like Bertold Brecht. Or Kurt Weill . or or or
