Alan studied art in Italy before moving to London to concentrate on his music. He supported London singer Adele on her debut headline tour, after meeting her at a gig and contacting her through her MySpace profile. Soon after that, Alan moved into a flat with friend and fellow singer/songwriter, Jay Jay Pistolet. The flat downstairs was occupied by Winston and Marcus of Mumford and Sons. Alan has revealed that he was once in a band named 'Sex Face' with Ted of Mumford and Sons.
In February 2010, Alan recorded a session at Maida Vale Studios for BBC Introducing and was interviewed by BBC Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton, who is a keen supporter of his work. Fearne first played Alan's track Chasing Time on 19 February 2010.
Alan's debut EP is released on 5 April 2010 through Mercury Records and his album True Love Stories was released on 25 June 2010.
In September 2010 Alan was dropped by Mercury Records.
You Know

Taking your leave
Do you lie before you sleep
Catching a thought
Reel in and caught
Throw it back for the sport
You play your days away
Make all the rules
I will find it in you
Something for me
Why won't you see
We could be so happy
If you′d run away with me
You know, you know
How I play on every move
In a game that I can only lose
You said how you feel
I wasn't just me
I was led to believe
You had me along
I was too soft
It was never good enough
So you walk away with him
You know, you know
How I play on every move
In a game that I can only lose
You know, you know
How I play on every move
In a game that I can only lose
(Instrumental break)
You know, you know
How I play on every move
In a game that I can only lose
You know, you know
How I play on every move
In a game that I can only lose
The song "You Know" by Alan Pownall is a reflective ballad about unrequited love and the acceptance that comes with it. In the first verse, the singer acknowledges that the person they love does not care about pleasing them and is leaving them behind. The phrase "Do you lie before you sleep" could refer to the person's inability to be honest with themselves or with the singer. The lines "Reel in and caught/Throw it back for the sport" indicate that this person plays with the singer's emotions, catching and releasing them like a fisherman.
The chorus of the song is where the singer lays out their feelings, asking the person to run away with them so they can be happy together. The repeated phrase "You know, you know/How I play on every move/In a game that I can only lose" emphasizes the singer's powerlessness in the situation. This person knows they have control over the singer's heart and manipulates them for their own enjoyment.
The second verse describes the singer's realization that the person they love was not completely honest with them about their feelings. The line "I was led to believe/You had me along" suggests that this person let the singer believe they had a chance at a relationship, only to crush their hopes in the end. The phrase "It was never good enough" could refer to the singer's efforts to win this person's heart, which were ultimately unsuccessful.
Overall, the lyrics of "You Know" paint a picture of unrequited love and the emotional toll it can take on someone who feels powerless in the face of another's indifference.
