Midnight Sun
Alaska Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your lips were like a red and ruby chalice, warmer than the summer night
The clouds were like an alabaster palace, rising to a snowy height
Each star its own aurora borealis, suddenly you held me tight
I could see the midnight sun
I can't explain the silver rain that found me or was that a moonlit veil?
The music of the universe around me or was that a nightingale?
And then your arms miraculously found me, suddenly the sky turned pale
I could see the midnight sun
Was there such a night, it's a thrill I still don't quite believe
But after you were gone, there was still some stardust on my sleeve
The flame of it may dwindle to an ember and the stars forget to shine
And we may see the meadow in December, icy white and crystalline

But oh, my darling always I'll remember when your lips were close to mine
And we saw the midnight sun

Overall Meaning

In Alaska's song "Midnight Sun," the singer describes a romantic moment with a lover where they witnessed the midnight sun. The singer compares their lover's lips to a "red and ruby chalice" and describes the clouds as an "alabaster palace." The stars are their own "aurora borealis" as the lover holds the singer tight, and they both witness the unique natural phenomenon of the midnight sun. The second verse describes the surreal experience of the evening, where the singer is unsure if they were surrounded by a "moonlit veil" or the "music of the universe." Regardless, the lover's arms found the singer, and they witnessed the sky turning pale as they saw the midnight sun.

The chorus serves as a reflection of the moment the singer shared with their lover, questioning its existence and remembered its significance. The singer remains haunted by the experience, holding onto the "stardust" that remains on their sleeve after the lover is gone. The finiteness of the moment is acknowledged as the "flame of it may dwindle to an ember," and the meadow may turn "icy white and crystalline" in winter, but the memory of the midnight sun with the lover will always remain.

I would love to take a trip to Alaska sometime during the summer just so I can experience daylight after midnight. That’ll be so awesome.

I did it this summer in Fairbanks. It was amazing. The only problem is that the place that my tour group was staying didn’t have blackout shades. Only regular ones. So light was still coming into my room as I was trying to sleep. In Anchorage which is 360 miles south of Fairbanks it does get fully dark there but only for about four hours so it’s still light out at 11:00 PM.

Awesome video!

I experienced this in my mid-20s, it was one of the most peculiar/satisfying experiences of my life.

At one point, about 4 or 5 days into my trip, I deluded myself into thinking that it would never get dark again - the fact that I was sleep deprived, and that I had never experienced constant daylight, had me thinking funny things. Lol.

Alaska is an incredibly beautiful state, I hope to go back one day. Cheers.

My favorite part is how you still sound like it's midnight while the kids sound just like its normal daytime

I think it would be too trippy to live in Alaska for me. I would sleep all winter and be wide awake in the summer. I would live to visit though. Looks beautiful

Makes you realise how weird life can be sometimes lol

It takes a special type of person to live in a place like that. I was in Alaska this summer. In Fairbanks it was light out all night and the place we stayed at didn’t have blackout shades. In Anchorage it only gets dark for about four hours a night.

I love your natural lawn there... It's full of beautiful wild plants and wild flowers.. It's not boring to watch lawns like that. I don't like pretty well-trimmed lawns!

BigBadChupa95

This looks so cool to experience
