To All The Girls I Loved Before
Albert Hammond Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
who traveled in and out my door.
I'm glad they came along,
I dedicate this song
to all the girls I've loved before.
To all the girls I once caressed,
and may I say, I've held the best,
for helping me to grow, I owe a lot, I know,
The winds of change are always blowing
and ev'ry time I tried to stay.
The winds of change continued blowing,
and they just carried me a way.
To all the girls who shared my life,
who now are someone else's wife;
I'm glad they came along,
I dedicate this song
to all the girls I've loved before.
To all the girls who cared for me,
who filled my nights with ecstacy;
they live within my heart;
I'll always be a part of all the girls I've loved before.
the winds of change are always blowing
and ev'ry time I tried to stay.
The winds of change continued blowing,
and they just carried me way.
To all the girls we've loved before,
who traveled in and out our door;
we're glad they came along
we dedicate this song
In the song "To All The Girls I've Loved Before" by Albert Hammond, the lyrics reflect on various romantic relationships that the singer has experienced throughout his life. The opening lines express gratitude and nostalgia towards the women who have come and gone from his life, acknowledging their impact on his journey. The repeated refrain of dedicating the song to these past loves emphasizes the importance of each relationship, highlighting the role they played in shaping him as a person.
The lyrics delve into the different aspects of love, from tender moments of caressing and intimacy to the bittersweet realization that some of these women have moved on to be with someone else. Despite the passage of time and the changes that come with it, the singer acknowledges the lasting imprint these women have left on his heart and his life. This recognition of the past and the people who have shared his experiences reflects a sense of maturity and acceptance of how love can evolve over time.
The mention of the "winds of change" serves as a metaphor for the inevitable shifts and uncertainties that come with love and relationships. The singer reflects on his attempts to hold on to certain connections in the face of change, only to be carried away by the winds of fate. This imagery underscores the transient nature of love and the constant movement of life, urging acceptance and adaptation to the ever-changing circumstances that come with loving and letting go.
As the song progresses, the perspective widens to encompass not just the singer's individual experiences, but also a collective acknowledgment of shared memories and connections. The final lines extend the dedication to all the girls loved not just by the singer, but by anyone who has experienced the twists and turns of love. This inclusive gesture speaks to the universal nature of love and the commonality of its joys and sorrows, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human experiences through the lens of past relationships.
