Keelhauled
Alestorm Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My friends I stand before you
To tell a truth most dire
They lust a traitor in our midst
Who haven't vote the captain's ire

He don't deserve no mercy
We ought to shoot him with a gun
But I am not an evil man
So first let's have a little fun

We'll tie that scoundrel to a rope
And throw it overboard
Drag him underneath the ship
A terrifying deadly trip

Keelhaul, that filthy landlubber, send him down to the depths below
Make that bastard walk the plank with a bottle of rum and a yo-ho-ho

Keelhaul, that filthy landlubber, send him down to the depths below
Make that bastard walk the plank with a bottle of rum and a yo-ho-ho

I will not say what he has done
His sins are far to grave to tell
It's not my place to judge a man
But boy he will burn in hell

The sharks will dine up on his flesh
And davie jones will have his soul
Take his money and his hat
He won't need them where he's gonna go

And first lets tie him to a rope
And throw him overboard
Drag him underneath the ship
A terrifying deadly trip

Keelhaul, that filthy landlubber, send him down to the depths below
Make that bastard walk the plank with a bottle of rum and a yo-ho-ho

Keelhaul, that filthy landlubber, send him down to the depths below
Make that bastard walk the plank with a bottle of rum and a yo-ho-ho

We'll tie that scoundrel to a rope
And throw him overboard
Drag him underneath the ship
A terrifying deadly trip

Keelhaul, that filthy landlubber, send him down to the depths below

Keelhaul, that filthy landlubber, send him down to the depths below

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Alestorm’s “Keelhauled” depict a group of sailors seeking retribution against a traitor in their crew. The singer acknowledges that the traitor deserves punishment, but also notes that he is not an evil man and proposes that they have some “fun” before condemning him to death. The “fun” they have is a centuries-old maritime punishment known as keelhauling, in which the victim is tied to a rope and dragged underneath the ship. The singer declares that the traitor will be sent to the depths of the ocean, where he will be devoured by sharks and claimed by Davy Jones, a mythical figure associated with death at sea.

The song is a fictional account of a specific type of vigilante justice that sailors would occasionally carry out on board ships during the Age of Sail. Keelhauling was a brutal and often fatal punishment, intended to make an example of the victim and warn others against mutiny or other forms of disobedience. In some cases, the victim would be tied to a heavy weight or an anchor, ensuring that they would not resurface and would be drowned immediately. While the song depicts the sailors enjoying the spectacle of the keelhauling, it is worth noting that in reality it was a grueling and traumatic experience for both the victim and the perpetrators.

@Sam Mason nah, OP’s right, give up on the loot and harass the crew who sunk you till they give up and surrender the loot (my buddies and I done that)

If your interested in the story, here goes

My buddies and I logged onto sea of thieves, and near the outpost was a ship that dropped it’s loot for some reason so we picked it all up, saw it was a vault key, so we took it and went to Kraken’s Falls (where the vault key belonged). All is good till a sloop and a brig attacked us, so we fought and lost a ton of loot we had picked up along the way to Kraken’s Falls (we spawned on the west most point of the map while making our way East, plenty of loot we picked up along the way). We sunk them and we sank as well, hours later we find them once more partnered with a galley who’s farming FOTD, so we turned our Brig into the Jackdaw and rammed the shit out of all of them, hit a collateral cause they all parked together, I jumped onto the galley and got up the mast above the wheel to tuck and spy on em (I have CC converted chat on cause of my hearing disability, and used it to my advantage in figuring out their next moves), buddies rammed them for maybe an hour or 2 before they finally decided to cash the loot in. We sunk em all just as they approached the outpost and I guess the galley crew all quit cause they were never to be seen on the server again. I’m cashing in their loot in front of their very eyes as my buddies kept them busy on ships and combat. Later found they had reapers only items so we chased them down to reapers (actually beat the brig and sloop to reapers as well), stole their reapers chest and cashed that in front of the crew as well. We sunk em and they quit finally, these guys were already pissed and were messaging my buddies and I cause they are getting salty bout it, but finally, it came full freakin circle when we found the Vault Key on the Brig Crew’s ship, the damn key that started a 5 hour assault on the Sea of Thieves, now in our possession once more!

We made 2 million gold doing this as well, enemy’s FOTD loot was STACKED on top of the vault my buddies and I did
