When Instant Star wrapped after four seasons (2005-2008), Alexz endured her share of off-camera drama in her music career, when both Capitol and Epic, respectively, ended up shelving her records due to internal conflicts . "It’s been tough,” she says, “but something always keeps me going. Even with no money in my pocket, things land where they land and you keep moving.” Johnson had completed a full length record entitled Weight in 2008, and was set to release it in September the next year.
Alexz independently released her debut album, Voodoo in 2010 and remixed it in 2011 as Reloaded. She released a compilation of unheard demos in the form of The Basement Recordings (2011), while prepping to release her first EP, Skipping Stone in January 2012. She has also released one live album, Live from the Skipping Stone Tour in December 2012. Johnson later continued to release two more demo compilations, The Basement Recordings 2 and The Basement Recordings 3 in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
Finding success and a loyal fanbase through her independent releases, Johnson's 2014 EP, Heart and sophomore album Let 'Em Eat Cake were both funded through the crowdfunding service Pledgemusic. Heart and Let 'Em Eat Cake both showcase a different side of Johnson, tackling subjects such as heartbreak and loss. The two releases include tracks produced by David Kahne, who has worked with Lana Del Rey, Kelly Clarkson, Regina Spektor, and other artists.

Would you dive right in and save me?
If I was falling like a star
Would you be right there to catch me?
If I was dreaming of your kiss
Would you look right through me?
On the street I'm waiting
Your eyes are holding up the sky
Your eyes make me weak, I don't know why
Your eyes make me scared to tell the truth
I thought my heart was bullet-proof
Now I'm dancing on the roof
And everybody knows I'm into you
If my heart was sadder than a song
Would you still listen?
If my tears fell on you, one by one
Would you see them glisten?
On the street I'm waiting
In my heart it's raining
Your eyes are holding up the sky
Your eyes make me weak I don't know why
Your eyes make me scared to tell the truth
I thought my heart was bullet-proof
Now I'm just dancing on the roof
Every single thing you say makes me want to run away
Sometimes love's a rainy day but life goes on
Your eyes are holding up the sky
Your eyes make me weak, I don't know why
Your eyes make me scared to tell the truth
I thought my heart was bullet-proof
But I'm dancing on the roof
And everybody knows I'm into you
The lyrics to "Your Eyes" by Alexz Johnson express the vulnerability and uncertainty of falling in love. The singer questions whether their love interest would be there for them in times of need, asking if they would save them if they were drowning or catch them if they were falling. Despite their doubts and fears, the singer is unable to resist their attraction to this person and finds themselves dancing on the roof, unable to hide their feelings any longer.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the power of the love interest's eyes in the singer's life. Their eyes are described as holding up the sky and making the singer weak, while also making them feel scared to tell the truth. The singer had believed that their heart was "bullet-proof," suggesting a resistance to love, but the power of their love interest's gaze has since shattered that illusion. They acknowledge that sometimes love can be difficult, but life goes on regardless.
Overall, the lyrics of "Your Eyes" express a mix of vulnerability, uncertainty, and passion. The singer is hesitant to fully give themselves over to their feelings, but ultimately cannot resist the attraction they feel toward their love interest.

I never realized when this show was airing but this had to be one of the best songs from Season 1. The music was almost too good for the show, not saying that the show wasn’t good for the target demographic but THESE SONGS stood all on their own. Wish I could stream these on Spotify. 👀

I still play songs from all seasons. But S1-2 are just iconic! I bought the CDs when I was a teen & legit still watch this show on Freeform. Her songwriting songs are legit top tier. Her & her brother created BOPS for this show!
