Bye Bye Baby
Alice Cooper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What's wrong with you today
I could never tell
Got something drastic on your mind
I can smell the small
Honey what's your trip today
Can't look me in the eye
A couple thousand miles away
You took me by surprise
You left a message on the telephone
From New York City, your new home
You didn't like the neighborhood
You really hated Hollywood
You said
Bye bye baby
Bye bye girl
Bye bye baby
You're in another world
You said my friends are boring
You said my house is small
You like it fifty stories high
You like livin' tall
You hate the L.A. freeways
You hate the L.A. smog
You hate the west coast phonies
You like the city doors (?)
I'm confused but I'm not mad
Said I'm the worst you've ever had
I ain't delusional, or institutional
But I'm pretty sure I ain't that bad
I said
Bye bye baby
Bye bye girl
Bye bye baby
You're in another world
I tried to reach you on your private line
You sure ain't calling mine
Now I'm sittin' here all alone
With a broken heart in three tine zones
(Bye bye baby) Bye bye baby
(Bye bye girl) paging your phone (?)
(Bye bye baby) please check your email (?)
(Bye bye girl) Why not your beeper (?)
(Bye bye baby) Stick your head out the window
Oh I'm mad as hell
Bye bye baby
Anyone at home?
Hello? Hello?

Anybody there?
Hello? Pick up?

Overall Meaning

In Alice Cooper's song "Bye Bye Baby," the singer addresses a lover who has suddenly decided to leave him for a new life in New York City. The song begins with the singer asking what is wrong with her and why she seems so distant, but then he finds out that she has moved away without telling him face-to-face. She has left him a message on the phone and explains that she prefers living in a different city, hates certain elements of his current home, and is just completely over their relationship. The singer is left confused, hurt, and ultimately angry, but also feels like he was not the worst partner his lover ever had.

The song is a poignant depiction of a failed relationship and the ultimate breakup of two people who can no longer make their love work. It illustrates how even a couple that seems to have everything going for them when they first start dating can eventually end up going their separate ways. The lyrics suggest that the female character's discontent with their relationship grew so strong that she was willing to pack up and move to a different city just to get away from him.

Lyrics:

If you hate me after what I say
I can’t put it off any longer
I just gotta tell you anyway

Bye bye baby, baby goodbye
Bye bye baby, don’t make me cry

You’re the one girl in town I’d marry
Girl, I’d marry you now if I were free
I wish it could be
I could love you but why begin it
‘Cause there ain’t any future in it
She’s got me and I’m not free, so

Bye bye baby, baby goodbye
Bye bye baby, don’t make me cry

Guess I never will know you better
Wish I knew you before I met her
Gee, how good you would be for me
Should have told you that I can’t linger
There’s a wedding band on my finger
She’s got me and I’m not free, so

Bye bye baby, baby goodbye
Bye bye baby, don’t make me cry

Bye bye baby, baby goodbye
Bye bye baby, don’t make me cry…
