Who is she?
Alice Jemima is a 19 year old singer songwriter from Newton Abbot, Devon. Her songs are carefully crafted slices of pop. She plays a vintage Hofner guitar and sings with a voice that is both fragile and rich…
Where’s she been seen?
2011 saw Alice Jemima performing at a couple of high profile gigs, including the unveiling of the Olympic Rings at St Pancras International (where she played to the likes of Seb Coe and Boris Johnson).
She was selected from hundreds for a spot on the BBC introducing stage at Wychwood Festival where Elisa Bray (Independent Newspaper) declared Alice to be ‘first and top of my list’. And chosen by BBC Introducing Bristol to ‘demonstrate the terrifically high standard and variety of music in the local area’ by playing at the BBC’s first live gig in Bristol.
Her next gig will be on January 11th 2012 at the Proud Galleries in Camden for Music Week.
Where’s she been heard?
Radio 1’s Rob da Bank played Alice Jemima, and later in the year, Tom Robinson at Radio 6 courtesy of Breaking More Waves Blog who lined Alice Jemima up alongside the likes of Rizzle Kicks, Curxes and made her the lead choice of song with ‘Red Coat’, produced in the studio of Grammy nominated producer Andy Chatterley and Jason Tarver, both of whom worked with Kylie Minogue on her album Aphrodite.
BBC Bristol have been heralding Alice Jemima since her win at Teenage Rampage, Exeter in 2010, and she is a regular on their BBC introducing slot.
Who knows about her?
Fans of Alice Jemima include Rob da Bank, who played her music on Radio 1 before she became a regular fixture in his week courtesy of his ‘A Song In Seven Hours Competition’, which she won with a song written for him entitled ‘Psychedelic Bacon’, taking her to his festival on the Isle of Wight. Other fans include Nerina Pallot who selected Alice Jemima to play support for her in 2009 and more recently (December 2011) to perform alongside her in a duet.
Hofner have been quick to latch onto Alice Jemima, providing her with guitars to play, and adding her to their portfolio of Hofner Artists alongside the others such as Mick Box, Paul McCartney and Chris Rea.

But it's on my mind
I don't want to talk about it
But you pretend its never happened
Ooooh
It's about to get toxic
It's about to get so extreme
Things going to blow up
It's about to get toxic
Your words going to dig into me
I wanted just to talk
But now you want to have it out with me
Why can't we just talk
It's going from one extreme
To another
I said that I'm sorry but that's not enough
Now you say I'm something I'm not
I don't want to talk about it but it's on my mind
Ooooh
It's about to get toxic
It's about to get so extreme
Things going to blow up
Ooooh
It's about to get toxic
Your words going to dig into me
Ooooh
It's about to get toxic
It's about to get so extreme
Things going to blow up
Ooooh
It's about to get toxic
Your words going to dig into me
I wanted just to talk
But now you want to have it out with me
Why can't we just talk
It's going from one extreme
To another
I said I'm sorry but that's not enough
Now you say I'm something I'm not
The lyrics to Alice Jemima's song "Toxic" explore the theme of a relationship that is about to turn sour. The singer expresses their reluctance to discuss the issues at hand, but the weight of the situation is weighing heavily on their mind. The other person in the relationship, on the other hand, seems to be in denial, pretending that nothing is wrong even though things are about to get “toxic”. The escalating intensity of their conversation is highlighted in the repetition of the line "It's about to get so extreme / Things going to blow up," suggesting that the situation is rapidly deteriorating.
The singer initially wanted to have a calm conversation, but they quickly realize that the other person wants to argue and fight. There is a sense that the conversation is going "from one extreme to another,” with the other person accusing the singer of being something they're not. Despite apologizing for their mistakes, the other person is still angry and unwilling to listen. Throughout the course of the song, the singer tries to hold their ground and not let the other person’s words dig into them, but the volatile nature of the situation only seems to be escalating.
