Also impressive is Krauss's unwavering commitment to being an independent-label artist who has succeeded far beyond the scope of many major-label artists. She has circulated freely within pop, mainstream country and roots music circles, as a solo artist and with her long-time band Union Station, creating impeccably produced records that appeal to an equally wide-ranging and inquisitive audience. Krauss has continued doing things the old-fashioned way: following her heart and whatever path the music takes her on.
Get Me Through December
Alison Krauss Lyrics

As the changing of seasons prepares me again
For the long bitter nights and the wild winter's day
My heart has grown cold my love stored away
My heart has grown cold my love stored away.
I've been to the mountain left my tracks in the snow
Where souls have been lost and the walking wounded go
I've taken the pain no girl should endure
But faith can move mountains
Faith can move mountains of that I am sure.
Just get me through December
A promise I'll remember
Get me through December
So I can start again.
No divine purpose brings freedom from sin
And peace is a gift that must come from within
I've looked for the love that will bring me to rest
Feeding this hunger beating strong in my chest
Feeding this hunger beating strong in my chest
Get me through December
A promise I'll remember
Get me through December
So I can start again.
I've been to the mountain left my tracks in the snow
Where souls have been lost and the walking wounded go
I've taken the pain no girl should endure
But faith can move mountains
But faith can move mountains of that I am sure.
The lyrics to Alison Krauss's song Get Me Through December describe the singer's feelings of despair and hopelessness during a difficult time, most likely during the winter. The opening lines paint a picture of a bleak and gloomy sky, setting the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The changing of seasons is a reminder that the singer is facing yet another winter filled with long, bitter nights and wild winter days. The phrase "my heart has grown cold my love stored away" implies that the singer has become emotionally distant and closed off from loved ones.
The second verse speaks of the singer's journey to the mountain, perhaps a metaphorical journey of self-discovery and healing. The mountain is a place where lost souls and the walking wounded go, and the singer has left her tracks in the snow, symbolizing her own struggles and pain. Despite enduring pain that "no girl should endure," the singer has faith that it can be overcome and that mountains can be moved. The promise to "just get me through December" is a plea to make it through the darkest months with the hope that a new beginning will follow.
The final verse reflects the search for love and peace, acknowledging that no divine purpose can bring freedom from sin and that peace must come from within. The hunger in the singer's chest for love and rest is palpable, and the repetition of the phrase "get me through December" emphasizes the urgency of the request. The song ends on a note of hope that faith can move mountains and that the singer can start again.

These are hard, joyless days for many. Stop rushing and look folks in the eye. Show mercy to strangers, clerks, broken-hearted.

Alison has been my favorite vocalist since I was 12. I’m now 42 and lost my little brother suddenly last October at 38. I’ve always loved this song, but it takes on a whole new meaning when you’re begging to just get through another month so you can “start again” when it comes to trying to be a normal person in the midst of grief.

Thank you so much. Our dad just suffered a massive heart attack today and is close to being with my baby brother again, which is why I came back to this song and saw your comment. It’s been a rough couple of Decembers, for sure. 💔

Very sorry for your profound loss. I find this helpful in grieving: "Grief is just love with no place to go." Hope your New Year is full of love. Celebrate your brother and yourself amidst the grief. Alisons angelic voice and words here hopefully help. She gets me through lots.
