If I Leave
Allen Toussaint Lyrics

If I can help somebody
As I travel along
If I can help somebody
With a word or song
If I can help somebody
From doing wrong
My living shall not be in vain.

My living shall not be in vain
My living shall not be in vain
If I can help somebody
While I'm singing this song
My living shall not be in vain

Sunrise
Sunset
Since the beginning it hasn't changed yet
People fly high begin to lose sight
You can't see very clearly when you're in flight
It's high time that you found
The same people you misuse on your way up
You might meet up
On your way down
Vintage wines from the year '62
It's your thing, it's your thing
It pleases you
You got to frown when you cross town
You think it's an honor just to have you around
It's high time that you found
The same dudes you misuse on your way up
You might meet up
On your way down
You think the sun rises and sets for you
But the same sun rises, sets and shines
On the poor folks too
I don't mind you turning round
I myself would even like a little higher ground
It's high time that you found
The same people you walk on on your way up
You might meet up
On your way down
On your way down

Always loved the Little Feat cover but hearing the great, late Mr Toussaint is amazing!

Allen wrote a bunch of good tunes!!!

I really love how Lowell and Little Feat covered it. Great sound

Nathan Parks

They always had that Nola vibe to the songs, Richie Hayward and Kenny Gradney had a killer second line style pocket.

Tim Sayles

Killer song. Toussaint could be so funky. Trombone Shorty did my favorite version.

Joseph Yolles

nice to hear the original version; I dig this and absolutely love the Little Feat version...

Gotta love that Delta soul & those groove licks! How awesome that he didn't need someone else to cover his song to make it a masterpiece. This original is a dead-set classic. Though I have a soft spot for Lowell. His voice & Little Feat's funk sound is what I envisage will be playing while we are all sitting together in purgatory waiting for judgement day.

"a little studio band called The Meters" haha. Legendary! The lot of 'em!

As mentioned by others here, Little Feat did a commendable cover of this a year after the original was released.
