What Do You Want the Girl to Do?
Allen Toussaint Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So you think the girl is crazy
To eat up your lies like it's good
(Your lies like apple pie)
(She don't even cry)
She is not a fool
She's just tryin' to do what her heart says to
To love you
And as you take to the wind
(to the wind again she breaks down)
And as she breaks down within (within, within)

She waits for you patiently
Hopin' that someday you'll see
[That] all she really wants to be
Is yours and yours alone, eternally

What do you want the girl to do
[Don't you know] you're breakin' the child in two
[Can't you see]
What do you want the girl to do
All she really wants is you
She knows what you are
Still she'll be your queen if you let her
(Just say the word today)
(Build the world around her)
Now and then you'll promise
All the way-out things you're goin' to get her
(You will see, you will see)
(You're so damn glad you found her, found her, years ago)
Cause ma she knows better
As she watched you come and go (all you'll show)
And as she watched your promises erode

She waits for you patiently
Hopin' that someday you'll see
[That] all she really wants to be
Is yours and yours alone, eternally

What do you want the girl to do
[Don't you know] you're breakin' the child in two
[Can't you see]
What do you want the girl to do
All she really wants is you
She knows what you are
Still she'll be your queen if you let her
(Just say the word today)
(Build the world around her)
Now and then you'll promise
All the way-out things you're goin' to get her
(You will see, you will see)
(You're so damn glad you found her, found her, years ago)
'Cause ma she knows better
As she watched you come and go (all you'll show)
And as she watched your promises erode

What do you want the girl to do
Don't you know you're breakin' the child in two

What do you want the girl to do
Can't you see you're breakin' the child in two

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "What Do You Want the Girl to Do?" by Allen Toussaint explore the complex emotions of a woman who loves a man who continuously lets her down. The opening lines suggest that the man is a habitual liar and manipulator who takes advantage of the woman's love for him. Despite this, the woman is not foolish, but rather, is trying to follow her heart and love him despite his flaws. The chorus repeats the question, "What do you want the girl to do?" which seems to be directed at the man who is causing the woman pain. The woman is patiently waiting for the man to realize that all she wants is to be his and his alone, but he consistently breaks her heart.

The lyrics suggest that the woman knows exactly who the man is, but she is still willing to be his queen and build a world around him. She has hope that he will one day come around and fulfill his promises to her, but she has also watched those promises erode over time. The repeated question of "What do you want the girl to do?" seems to be a plea to the man to recognize the harm he is causing and to make a decision about how he wants to treat this woman who loves him.

Overall, the song portrays the complex emotions of a woman who loves a man who consistently lets her down. The lyrics highlight the woman's struggle to balance her love for the man with the pain he causes her, and the repeated question of "What do you want the girl to do?" serves as a reminder of the man's responsibility in the situation.

Lowell George rendition of this song is absolutely a TRUE MASTERPIECE! Yet, listening to this version right from the source is ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. Hats off to Allen Toussaint <3 <3

Southern Nights by Glen Campbell and Allan Toussaint are almost completely different songs, save for the words.

Allen always struck me as a real classy individual. Polite, clean cut. The professor of New Orleans. A real gift to us all. Thanks New Orleans.

Happy to say I met Allen Toussaint on two separate occasions. Just as warm, gracious gentlemanly, and elegant as you could see that he is here...and inspirational. I went home thinking 'that's the kind of person I'd like to be.' And, a great storyteller. He would tell wonderful stories of his influential youth that led up to the tune he'd then play. RIP. Thank you for the wonderful music you left for us all.

Monte Byrd
