personally these are my tips. For those visiting tokyo. If you have the option it is much better to go to Haneda than Narita (its around 30 mins faster if you are say going to Tokyo station. Its much closer and cheaper to to get into Tokyo this way.

Kim actually made a mistake with how long it takes by train. if you take the Narita express it takes around 1 hour

i also recommend getting a Simcard before arriving in japan so this way you are all ready to go.

for the train system use a website called hyperdia. its more comprehensive than Google.

If you are staying at one of the big hotels in Tokyo, buy a ticket on the limousine bus route that stops at the hotel you are staying at. Your luggage gets put in the bus and taken out at your hotel, where a bellboy takes it in for you, while you register.

Thanks so much for this video Kim! I saw it just before we came to Japan for the first time. Originally I was thinking about trying the luggage service and then taking the train to Shibuya, but in the end we were just really tired after the travelling, and this video made me consider trying the limousine bus transfer service. Well after actually taking the city trains later in our trip, I am SO glad that we made that choice, it would have been really difficult for us to navigate around the trains with all the luggage and a child in tow while being so jet lagged! We thought the limousine bus service was really good and used it again to get back to the airport too. I think it ended up costing about Y80,000 each way for 2 adults and a child, door to door and no dramas with the luggage. So thanks again for such an informative video showing us all the options!

traveling solo in japan can be a little scary the first time but once you get there and get comfortable, it gets a lot easier. i was more nervous because i don't know the language which can make things a little bit difficult. there were a couple people though who saw me on this last trip i went on to tokyo who asked if i needed help (which was surprising tbh since the first time i went alone no one asked if i needed help) if you know japanese, i'm sure it'll be easier as well.

JR rail pass definitely saves you tons as you can go practically everywhere with it. It’s cheaper for tourists too. Once you land in japan, look for the JR RAIL store (everywhere) to book where you wanna go and they’ll help you as well. If you don’t want to pay for luggage service, it’s ok to lug it yourself. It looks like she paid close to $40-50 for that one way trip so I’m not sure I’d think it’s worth it....but I’m cheap hahaha! I could be wrong bc I didn’t rewatch. I hope she paid less :)
I’m from USA and I get the google fi SIM card (look it up and they can mail one to you or you can buy at Best Buy for $10). I used it to go japan, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia all in one trip and didn’t have to change SIM cards! I think it was roughly $60 for unlimited internet basically in all those countries. Before I use to buy SIM cards and had to change them out every country. Using 20-30$ each time! Google fi made life much easier.

There’s a lot of money exchange places there at airport but I always change out money at currency exchange place. You can call them in advance. Most places take credit cards in japan but I use it for all the family marts or 7/11 (there’s about 2-4 in each block) and all the vending machines. You MUST try the food in there! So cheap and delicious! And you can buy almost anything you’d need for your trip there lol!
And if you are struggling where to go to first in Tokyo, I’d say shinjuka is where all the action is! And from there it’s easier to get around everywhere in Tokyo!

My first time, after customs and immigration, I walked to get my pocket wifi, then down stairs exchanged some cash real quick, walked across the hall to the jr store and got my round trip narita express. Then down to the tracks, got a drink out of the vending machine and waited for the train to Tokyo Station

UGHHH how I wish your video had come out in 2015!! I went there for my first time ever with someone even more clueless than I was and we literally spent our first 2 hours in Japan at Narita airport trying to figure out how to get our phones to work so we could contact our AirBNB and get the directions to get to the house so we could drop our luggage off and settle in for the night, we arrived in the early evening the night before Halloween lol. MY damn luggage got trapped in Russia so the airport had me sign papers and they delivered my luggage on Halloween night just as I got back from trick-or-treating in Harajuku wearing my Mickey Mouse PJ's since they were all I had to wear. Worked out well but still lmao. This whole video would have been such a big help lol. Thankfully once we had directions, the staff at the airport got us a ticket to the closest subway station to our host house and then sent us on our way.

I dont know how my mom and I survived the travel from airport to our airbnb WITHOUT wifi. We did not bother to get wifi because our accommodation comes with free wifi. It was not until we got to Japan that we realized we should have booked wifi prior to our arrival. Thankfully all the Japanese I asked for instructions were kind and patient enough to explain the directions even with the language barrier.

Excellent presentation. Been to Japan a number of times, but for the last 5 years we have been just passing through Narita on the way to other Asian Countries. So this is going to be helpful for us in February when we head off to Sendai and then to Sapporo for the Freeze Your Toes Off Festival. LOL :)

When I was an exchange student I didn’t want to deal with my luggage as well but I use different service called CA-GO because it’s much cheaper lol.

Hi Kim, do you know if i can pick up my luggage from the airport a week or so after getting it delivered to the airport? So for instance I arrange for pick up today and it gets sent to the airport, but I actually go collect it from the airport a week later on the day of my flight. Thanks!
I'm wondering if it's a cheaper alternative than storing my luggage for a week with a baggage storage service since they charge by the day.

My friend and I used your videos to plan our trip to Japan in 2018 and you were the only one we found that had a capsule hotel in Akihabara for women only. Surprisingly it was really difficult to find a women only capsule hotel near Tokyo station! All the closer ones seemed to cater to only men.
It would be awesome to see more helpful travel tips like this since we never knew about the luggage service in Japan and we did a lot of research before our trip!

I am also a aussie that went to japan it was a 9 hour flight in a small tin can. I was there when the typhoon hit and it was a nightmare to run around with but i enjoyed the trains with the JR pass i know your pain when i was walking around with the big bag but i cant wait to go back there again next year 202.1

use the train. its the cheapest and most convenient way. you need to get on Nankai line get off at Namba station then switch to the Midosuji line and get off at shinsaibashi station then you can walk a short distance.

I’ve heard that you need reservations for the Shinkansen starting May 2020. Have you heard about it? I am a little worried because I’ll travel in Oktober next year and want to take my luggage with me on the train 🤔

From my understanding you can get reservations for the shinkansen almost up until it leaves. So needing a reservation isn't that big of a deal. It is just at peak hours if you show up at the last minute you may need to wait until the next train.

I would just like to point out a few things.
#1. You don't really NEED to change your phone's SIM card. Narita airport has free WiFi and most hotels have WiFi as well.
#2. Luggage delivery is fine, but it comes with a cost. I travel light, so I only have a tiny suitcase, but if you do have bigger bags, it's much cheaper to use coin lockers in train stations. Better yet, just drop them off at your hotel for safekeeping, then travel around suitcase-free the whole day before going back to the hotel to check in.

Not really... don't do too much on Airport since it overprice.. Train and take your thing to hotel first would be the best option... study map and expect to face some problem along the way... You want stress free... don't think of coming to Japan.....
