Under your spell/Standing
Amber Benson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I lived my life in shadow
Never the sun on my face
It didn't seem so sad, though
I figured that was my place
Now I'm bathed in light
Something just isn't right

I'm under your spell
How else could it be
Anyone would notice me?
It's magic, I can tell
How you set me free
Brought me out so easily

I saw a world enchanted
Spirits and charms in the air
I always took for granted
I was the only one there
But your power shone
Brighter than any I've known

I'm under your spell
Nothing I can do
You just took my soul with you
You worked your charm so well
Finally, I knew
Everything I dreamed was true

You made me believe
The moon to the tide
I can feel you inside

I'm under your spell
Surging like the sea
Wanting you so helplessly
I break with every swell
Lost in ecstasy
Spread beneath my willow tree

You make me complete
You make me complete

You make me complete
You make me?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Amber Benson's song ‘Under Your Spell’ talk about a person who has been living in the shadows their entire life. They never experienced the warmth of the sun on their face, but it was something they had grown accustomed to. However, when they met someone special, things changed. The person put them under their spell. The subject of the song does not know how it happened, but they know it is magic. They now feel noticed, seen and even enchanted with the world around them. They soon realize that the charm of the person who has put them under their spell is much stronger than any magic they’ve ever known before. Despite feeling helpless and powerless, they are completely entranced by the charm of the other person.

The song’s lyrics also indicate that being put under the spell comes as both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing because the subject of the song has finally found someone to guide them but it's also a curse because they know they are utterly consumed by the spell. The imagery used in the song, such as the moon to the tide or the sea, describe a powerful force that electrically draws the two people together.

Overall, the song is a haunting and moving ode to the power of love and how it can change someone’s life completely.

LYRICS!

TARA:
I'm under your spell
God, how can this be?
Playing with my memory
You know I've been through hell
Willow, don't you see?
There'll be nothing left of me
You made me believe

GILES (overlaps with Tara's last word):
Believe me, I don't wanna go

GILES AND TARA:
And it'll grieve me, cuz I love you so
But we both know

(Giles' and Tara's following verses overlap)
GILES:
Wish I could say
The right words
To lead you through this land
Wish I could play the father
And take you by the hand

TARA:
Wish I could trust that it was just this once
But I must do what I must
I can't adjust to this disgust
We're done and I just

GILES AND TARA:
Wish I could stay
Wish I could stay
Wish I could stay
Wish I could stay

@audreymichaut1833

Giles
J'voudrais t'écrire les mots vrais
Guider ton destin
Etr' comme un père qui transmet
Et qui te prend la main
Tara
Je voudrais croire ces trucs bizarres
Pourtant
Mon devoir est mon devoir
Toute cette histoire
Ca m'fout vraiment l'cafard
J'en ai marre
Giles + Tara
J'voudrais rester (x4)

@punkzombiemaiden5427

It sounds like they’re singing about eachother and this would’ve been an interesting character arc for Tara and also a more proper send off

Minus the deatH

Tara realizing she’s bi and hooks up with Giles and gets pregnant with his child and leaves willow

Goes to London to find Giles and some soul searching.

Willow also realized Tara was just a consolation prize and is bisexual

Or rather willow just stays single for a while and oz re enters her life.

"You know I've been through hell / Willow, don't you see? / There'll be nothing left of me..." is perhaps the saddest moment in the entire episode, :'(

@avg8922

It was the way of Whedon to say tara will die,, just like the last line, she wish she could stay :(

@robinr4697

@AVG I think it was more about Tara being mind-wiped by Glory in Season 5 and how Willow abused her in a cruel way. I think what was done here was a nice portraying of how abuse can compromise relationships easily even if you love the person you have to be careful because you can slip easily.
But Whedon planned to kill Tara since the end of Season 5 so you could also be right

@avg8922

@Robin Rajaonarivelo idk, i iguess it is more aobut the dead of tara because joss did the same in others songs, for example in anya and xander´s theme she said :"I know there'll come the day I'll want to run and hide" clearly talking about the days she dissapeared after the wedding's fail. joss always does prediction in his episodes for example in season3 in buffy's dream he gave clue about Dawm.
