By being one of the first bands to blend anarcho-punk and heavy metal music, Amebix are often cited as one of the key bands that helped to create the crust punk style, and are considered as a proto-thrash metal band. Such notable bands as Sepultura, Neurosis, and Deviated Instinct have paid homage.
The Power Remains
Amebix Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Something stirs from the past to live once again
Do you believe that there is life
In all that they told us was dead?
Our land, sea and sky
Our land, our claim
Our land, sea and sky
This faith that moved mountains, blue stone and earth
Has its roots in the past, it's rising again
The path of the serpent now trodden to dust
Is raised from its slumber to beckon us on
Nathrac! They ripped your innards out
Defiled the sacred land
But I believe the power remains
Reach out your hand
The lyrics to Amebix's song The Power Remains contain deep and insightful metaphors about the power of the past and the permanence of nature. The marshland and woods are symbols of the collective memories of humanity and the power that lies within them. The past is alive in these landscapes and can be resurrected through faith and belief. The question posed by the lyrics, "Do you believe that there is life in all that they told us was dead?" is a call to action, encouraging listeners to look beyond conventional wisdom and to search for the power that remains hidden in the past.
The second verse of the song speaks to the power of nature and its ability to endure through generations. The land, sea, and sky are all interconnected and form the foundation of our existence. We have a sacred bond with the earth and the power it holds. The path of the serpent is a reference to ancient mythology, where the serpent represents wisdom and knowledge. This path has been forgotten and left to gather dust, but its potential remains, waiting for us to rediscover it.
The final verse is a call to honor the memory of Nathrac, a slain warrior who fought to defend the sacred land. The power remains within us, waiting to be harnessed if we choose to reach out and grasp it. The lyrics suggest that the power of the past is not dead, but merely dormant, waiting for us to awaken it. It is up to us to embrace this power and use it to create a better future.

this might sound odd, but every time near the end of the year, when everyone is getting sucking into Christmas, presents, consumerism, I found myself need a different way to refresh, reset and check back in with myself at the years end. So I play this song a lot, reread the lyrics, and welcome the reminder that underneath it all, there is hope, humanity, and myself all haven't lost it all yet. There is life in all that they told us was dead. We are still part of nature, we still can live the lives that are true to our rawest selves. We can look to the future, to the next year, with confidence and gratitude.
