Lee grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA. He has been quoted as saying that he is fortunate to have seen different sides of life in America. Lee enrolled at the University of South Carolina in 1995. He began to play guitar and write songs seriously while he studied English. After graduating with an English degree, Lee moved back to Philadelphia to teach elementary school. He later made the tough decision to stop teaching in order to pursue a career in music. Shortly thereafter, he released a self-produced EP that featured five of his original songs, which did extremely well in Philadelphia and created a buzz. Norah Jones was the person who finally gave Lee his big breakthrough when she asked him to open for her 2004 tour. Lee then went on to produce his self-titled debut album. In March and April of 2005 Lee opened for the tour that Merle Haggard and Bob Dylan were both embarking on, all 3 performers were extremely well received by critics as the tour went by, with Dylan receiving some of his strongest reviews in years. On October 3, 2006, Lee released his second album, "Supply & Demand" to critical and commercial acclaim.
At the age of only 27, Amos Lee has enjoyed notable success with his debut album and looks to have a promising future in the music business. His favorite artists and sources of inspiration include Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, John Prine, Bill Withers, and James Taylor.
Lullaby
Amos Lee Lyrics

Waited until she couldn't turn back
Her clothes in a pile and her blood in a stream
Yeah a lullaby don't always turn to a dream
Took both her kids and put em in the garage
And took off in her car and became a mirage
Out in the desert where the air is clean
An innocent man might take the blame
I'll shave my head, and change my name
Out in the desert it's as still as death
It's as if mother nature mother nature was holding her breath
The coyotes howl and the vultures scream
And a lullaby don't always turn to a dream
I guess it started when I was a teen
And my parents will never know their little boy is such a fiend
I guess sometimes it works out, but you never know what it means
Cause a lullaby don't always turn to a dream
Naw, a lullaby don't always turn to a dream
The lyrics to Amos Lee's "Lullaby" are haunting and mysterious, making it difficult to determine the meaning behind them. The song seems to be about a man who follows a woman down a railroad track and murders her, leaving her clothes in a pile and her blood in a stream. He then takes her two children and abandons them in a garage while he takes off in her car and becomes a mirage in the desert. The man seems to acknowledge that what he has done is wrong, as he mentions taking the blame and changing his name to protect an innocent man. The song ends with the man reflecting on his actions as a teenager and how his actions have led him to where he is now.
Despite the violent imagery in the lyrics, the song is gentle and lullaby-like in its melody, creating an eerie contrast between the words and the music. The repetition of the line "a lullaby don't always turn to a dream" serves as a reminder that things don't always turn out the way we expect them to.
Overall, "Lullaby" is a powerful and thought-provoking song that leaves the listener with more questions than answers.
