That's What Love Is For
Amy Grant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes we make it harder than it is
We'll take a perfect night
And fill it up with words we don't mean
Dark sides best unseen
And we wonder why we're feeling this way

Sometimes I wonder if we really feel the same
Why we can be unkind
Questioning the strongest of hearts
That's when we must start
Believing in the one thing that has gotten us this far

That's what love is for
To help us through it
That's what love is for
Nothing else can do it
Melt our defenses
Bring us back to our senses
Give us strength to try once more
Baby, that's what love is for

Sometimes I see you
And you don't know why I'm there
And I'm washed away by emotions
I hold deep down inside
Getting stronger with time
It's living through the fire
And holding on we find

That's what love is for
To help us through it
That's what love is for
Nothing else can do it
Melt our defenses
Bring us back to our senses
Give us strength to try once more
Baby, that's what love is for

Believing in the one thing
That has gotten us this far
That's what love is for
To help us through it
That's what love is for
Nothing else can do it
Round off the edges
Talk us down from the ledges
Give us strength to try once more
Baby, that's what love is for
That's what love is for

That's what love is for
Melt our defenses
Bring us back to our senses
Give us strength to try once more
Baby, that's what love is for
That's what love is for

Overall Meaning

The song "That's What Love Is For" by Amy Grant speaks about the struggles that people face in relationships, but also acknowledges the power of love to help overcome those struggles. The first verse talks about how sometimes we complicate things and how our own insecurities and negative feelings can lead to a breakdown in communication with our loved ones. The chorus then comes in and declares that love is the answer to all these problems, that it can melt our defenses and bring us back to our senses.

The second verse shows a reflection of the internal process that happens within us when we're in love. Sometimes we're scared, sometimes we feel vulnerable or helpless, but through it all, the love we feel for the other person remains strong. The second chorus repeats the message of the first chorus, that love is the only thing that can help us through these struggles in life. The bridge talks about the importance of trusting in the power of love, and how it can help to round off our rough edges and keep us from falling off the ledge. The song ends with a repeat of the chorus, reiterating the message that nothing else can do what love can do.

Love helps us smoothen our rough edges and keeps us from giving up on each other. It gives us the strength to try one more time and reignites our spirit when we are about to give up.

I just woke up from a dream.

In this dream a young woman, like my sister, but not my sister was weeping.

With brotherly love I embraced her and started singing this song.

She tried to push away, embarassed, upset that it was public area, wanting to cling to her despair.

I just held her closer and sang even harder.
Some people looked at me like I was crazy, but I sang louder, with more heart.

There was a choir nearby practicing another song and saw me singing as held this woman with the compassion of a brother who wished to heal this woman's mental and emotional wounds.

They saw I sang harder and louder as people just walked by, so this choir began singing it with me, in harmony.
With all these people singing, this woman finally gave into sweet release, accepting that she was loved, stopped fighting and hugged me hard in return and wept.

Not sadness.

She wept tears of sweet release.
Tears of realization.

We just sang harder, until literally everyone around got caught up and we were all singing.

Every person that passed by caught the bug of love and praise and just became filled with peace and joy; Random people celebrating God's Love.

I let the woman go, who wiped a tear from her eye, free of her burden.

People were shouting and celebrating everwhere around me.
Some people tried to get my attention to pander to me about commercialization, but I walked on.
Another offered me food, which I accepted and ate.

I saw my Aunt and Uncle, and being part Laotion, I sat cross legged on the ground and asked for Sticky Rice, eating a meager meal of sticky rice, egg, and asking for some Lao Sausage (My Favorite).

As I was eating people were meeting and greeting each other, and some walked by and I overheard them saying,
"There he is, that person is going places...."

I just wanted to share this, as I only remember this song as a child from the 90's, and actually disliked it.

Yet, I chose to sing this to the woman, and without embarassment, despite my lack of singing ability, I kept singing.

To see so many people let go of hate, anger, bear, bias; Black and White strangers hugging and greeting each other as brothers, old, young, Asian, Hispanic, Men, Women, all drop the differences and unite over love.
My heart was elated.

Random dream.

Weird, but powerful.

I realize this song is angellic, and it is truly what the world needs today.

We need love, God's love, which WILL bring is back to our senses.

I hope this song get's a revival, and just catches on like wildfire, spreading over the Earth.

We need to hear these words.

Maybe that is who the woman was, in my dream: A world burdened by fear, woe, a world which believes we are hated.

We need let go of our fear, hate, pain, and not only give love but accept that we are loved. To accept, give, and celebrate God's love.

To see souls unite and become healed, unafraid of all that Satan threw at us...

I woke up with wonder and tears in my eyes, minutes ago, and became compelled to listen to this song and type this message.

May God bless you, me, and all of us with his Love.

God is Wisdom, Power, Truth...but all flof these only exist, for us, because most of all, God is Love.

This song is one of the major reasons why I am still alive. I had a hard childhood due to bullying so much so I was depressed by the age of 10 and suicidal by the age of 11. This song came out around that time period and music played a vital role for me in the last 80s/early 90s. Well when I was 12 and in the 7th grade. I was by then going to a private school, since my parents believed that would help me and it did. Well the school had a talent show. I decided to give it a try and I sang this song. My grandpa was there too. I always believed I got my singing voice from my late Grandma after she passed away since she could sing, but I never could sing until after she passed away. I must have done a good job saving this song because the next day at school, literally all of the girls in my class came up to me saying how much they enjoyed my singing and invited me to 'hang out', which was a God sent. So this song, helped me make friends, and along with other factors like developing a personal relationship with God and Jesus, and having teachers who believed in me, well, these things help me see the value in myself and saved me. So this song will always have a special place in my heart, so thank you Amy Grant for creating this lovely song!

I play this kind of music with my kid to show him how beautiful, and meaningful music is in our times.

I sang this to my husband on our wedding day. This album became our theme. Hard to believe that was over 30 years ago.
