A self-taught musician, Macdonald began by playing her father's guitar after being inspired by Travis at the T in the Park Festival in 2000, where she heard Travis' song "Turn" and wanted to play it herself. She started performing in pubs and coffee houses around Glasgow at the age of 15. She signed a record deal with Vertigo, the same record label which hosts The Killers and Razorlight. Her first single, Poison Prince, was released on May 7, 2007. Her debut album, This Is the Life, was released on July 30, 2007. "Don't Tell Me That It's Over" was released in March 2010 as the lead single from her second studio album, A Curious Thing, which was released on 8 March 2010.
Macdonald's third album, Life in a Beautiful Light, was released on June 11, 2012. The lead single, Slow It Down, is about her being a petrol head.

Wishing I didn't know.
All the thoughts I was thinking,
I don't want to know.
Everyone's always moving,
I'm standing still for all the time.
Thoughts that I was living,
There's so much more that I could be,
So many places that I'll never see.
So many lives that I'll never meet.
I'll just dream until we get there in the end.
Always thinking 'bout tomorrow,
Before today is even through.
Always thinking 'bout the future,
What on earth will happen to you?
There's so much more that I could be,
So many places that I'll never see.
So many lives that I'll never meet.
I'll just dream until we get there in the end.
And if the world stops spinning,
Would I start moving home?
And if the world stopped dreaming,
Would I stop believing in it all?
There's so much more that I could be,
So many places that I'll never see.
So many lives that I'll never meet.
I'll just dream until we get there in the end.
I'll just dream until we get there in the end.
I'll just dream until we get there in the end.
The lyrics of In the End by Amy Macdonald reflect the feeling of being stuck in one place while life passes by. The singer wishes she was still dreaming and didn't have to be burdened by the thoughts that are constantly racing through her head. Everyone around her seems to be moving forward, while she remains stagnant. Thoughts of what she could have been, the places she could have seen, and the people she could have met echo in her mind, reminding her of the opportunities she missed. Despite all of this, the singer chooses to keep dreaming until the end, holding onto hope that she will eventually reach her desired destination.
The second verse emphasizes the constant need to think about tomorrow, often at the expense of enjoying the present. The singer ponders what will happen to her in the future, unable to shake the feeling of uncertainty. The final two verses suggest the singer's fear that everything will come to a standstill. If the world were to stop spinning or if everyone were to stop dreaming, it raises the question of what purpose she would have in life. Ultimately, the song's message is one of hope, encouraging listeners to continue dreaming until they reach their ultimate destination.
