A self-taught musician, Macdonald began by playing her father's guitar after being inspired by Travis at the T in the Park Festival in 2000, where she heard Travis' song "Turn" and wanted to play it herself. She started performing in pubs and coffee houses around Glasgow at the age of 15. She signed a record deal with Vertigo, the same record label which hosts The Killers and Razorlight. Her first single, Poison Prince, was released on May 7, 2007. Her debut album, This Is the Life, was released on July 30, 2007. "Don't Tell Me That It's Over" was released in March 2010 as the lead single from her second studio album, A Curious Thing, which was released on 8 March 2010.
Macdonald's third album, Life in a Beautiful Light, was released on June 11, 2012. The lead single, Slow It Down, is about her being a petrol head.

Who does her hair or
What clothes she wears
I don't care if it's YSL. I don't care if it's Chanel
What matters to me is a strong belief
All this beauty is skin deep
Don't care about hair, don't care about eyes
It's about what's inside
You'll never know who you'll meet on you way to the top
You'll probably see them again when your fame starts to drop
Down down, I'll meet you on the ground
It's no good with your hair and your shiny blue eyes
It's no good when you finally start to realize
I need something more
This pretty face don't work no more
What happened to achieving
What happened to believing in yourself
Why listen to the musings of someone, somebody else
I'm sorry I don't see and I can't quite believe it anymore
What happened to believing that beauty's in the eye of the beholder
You'll never know who you'll meet on you way to the top
You'll probably see them again when your fame starts to drop
Down down, I'll meet you on the ground
It's no good with your hair and your shiny blue eyes
It's no good when you finally start to realize
I need something more
This pretty face don't work no more
You'll never know who you'll meet on you way to the top
You'll probably see them again when your fame starts to drop
Down down, I'll meet you on the ground
It's no good with your hair and your shiny blue eyes
It's no good when you finally start to realize
I need something more
This pretty face don't work no more
The song "This Pretty Face" by Amy Macdonald challenges the societal obsession with physical beauty and encourages listeners to focus on inner qualities instead. The lyrics express that the singer does not care about external features such as hair and clothing brands but rather values inner strength and beliefs. She questions why people listen to the opinions of others and why they no longer believe in themselves.
The chorus repeats the phrase "you'll never know who you'll meet on your way to the top" and suggests that those who climb the ladder of success may come across those they have left behind on the way down. The singer acknowledges the fleeting nature of physical beauty and notes that it ultimately becomes irrelevant. The line "I need something more, this pretty face don't work no more" emphasizes the importance of substance over superficiality.
Overall, "This Pretty Face" is about finding meaning beyond what is visible on the surface and resisting the pressure to prioritize appearances over substance.
