And old postcards are romantically full of fact.
And the ones you have to watch
Are the ones that keep coming back.
And you came back; yes you came back.
Well old cards sit on old cards.
And the streets have changed,
And it's not what I want to hear, what I want to see
But your skin's covered in postcards from you to me, to me.
When you see me sit by myself,
You'll think that I'm waiting for someone else.
But I'm wishing for somewhere else, I'm wishing for somewhere else.
When you see me sit by myself,
You'll think that I'm waiting for someone else.
But I'm wishing for somewhere else, I'm wishing for somewhere else.
Two postcards in a month or so,
Well I don't know, I just don't know.
Two postcards in a month or so,
Well I don't know, I just don't know.
And it's not what I want to hear, what I want to see
but your skin's covered in postcards from you to me, to me,
To me, to me, to me, to me
The song "Postcards" by An Horse is a beautiful yet bittersweet reflection on the passage of time and the bittersweet memories it evokes. The lyrics describe a collection of old postcards, which have become objects of nostalgia that bring back a flood of memories. The singer reflects on the fact that old postcards are romantic when they are intact, reminding us of the past, but they are also full of fact - a painful reminder that things are not the same as they once were.
The singer then turns their attention to a specific set of postcards that "keep coming back," a reference to how difficult it can be to let go of the past. The reunion with the person who sent these postcards is similarly bittersweet; though they have come back, it is clear that they have changed and the singer is still grappling with the same issues they have always faced. The postcards become a symbol of the emotional baggage that the singer is carrying around with them.
The chorus is a poignant expression of the singer's inner conflict. On the one hand, they are surrounded by these postcards and the memories they evoke, but on the other hand, they know that they can never go back to that time again. The image of the recipient's skin being covered in postcards from the sender is a beautiful reminder of the deep emotional connection that once existed between them, but also of the pain and longing that still lingers.
