13. Tables And Chairs
Andrew Bird Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If we can call them friends then we can call them on their telephones
And they won't pretend that they're too busy or that they're not alone
And if we can call them friends then we can call
Holler at them down these hallowed halls
Just don't let the human factor fail to be a factor
At all

Don't, don't you worry, about the atmosphere
Or any sudden pressure change
Cause I know
That it's starting to get warm in here
And things are starting to get strange

And did you, did you see how all of our friends were there
And they're drinking roses from the can?
And how, how I wish I, I had talked to them,
And I wish they fit into the plan

And we were tired of being mild
We were so tired of being mild
And we were tired

I know we're going to meet some day
In the crumbled financial institutions of this land
There will be tables and chairs
There'll be pony rides and dancing bears
There'll even be a band
Cause listen, after the fall there will be no more countries
No currencies at all, we're gonna live on our wits
We're gonna throw away survival kits,
Trade butterfly-knives for adderal
And that's not all
Ooh-ooh, there will be snacks there will
There will be snacks, there will be snacks.

And we were tired of being mild,
We were so tired of being mild,
And we were (we were so) tired

So don't you,

Don't you worry
About the atmosphere.

Overall Meaning

The song "Tables" by Andrew Bird talks about the importance of human connection and friendship in a world where technology and busy schedules can sometimes get in the way of maintaining relationships. The first verse emphasizes the idea that if people truly consider each other friends, they will make an effort to reach out and connect with each other, despite the barriers that may exist. The second verse seems to highlight the fact that things are changing and getting strange in the world, but the singer assures their friend not to worry and that they will meet again someday. The last verse is a somewhat apocalyptic vision of the future where there are no more countries or currencies, but there will be tables and chairs, pony rides, dancing bears, and snacks, and people will survive on their wits.

The chorus, "And we were tired of being mild" is repeated throughout the song, suggesting that perhaps the singer and their friends have not been living their lives to the fullest, and now they are ready for a change. The chorus can be interpreted in various ways- perhaps they are tired of being complacent, of living uneventful, passive lives, of being too cautious, or maybe they are tired of a society that values conformity over individuality. The song as a whole seems to be a call for action, for people to not let technology, distance or any other factor prevent them from building and maintaining meaningful relationships, and to live life abundantly.

I've been looking for this song for a couple of years, remembering this only as the "there will be snacks" song. Finally my son tracked this down. Downright charming, funny, delightful. This is folksy singer-songwriter stuff plus a touch of Monty Python and Xanax.
