Angel Woman
Andrew Gold Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I realised today
The trust we had is long gone
But I love you more than I ever thought I should
Oh, my angel woman

We cried a few tears
I guess most lovers do, yeah, yeah
But tears alone weren't enough just to hold us
Oh, my angel woman

I'm doing well, I laugh a lot
I have so many friends
But oh the nights are long

Whoa, whoa my angel woman
I'm still in love but you're gone

Overall Meaning

The song Angel Woman by Andrew Gold is a melancholic ballad depicting the aftermath of a failed relationship. In the first verse, the singer acknowledges that the trust they once had in their relationship is now gone, but surprisingly, they still love their partner more than they thought they should. The phrase "angel woman" connotes a sense of ethereal beauty and pureness, possibly referring to the positive qualities that the singer still sees in their ex-partner.

The second verse acknowledges that the two lovers shed tears, as most people do when things fall apart. However, the singer knows that tears alone cannot save their relationship. The chorus repeats the phrase "angel woman" to underscore how strongly the singer still feels for their ex-partner. Despite having many friends and enjoying life in other ways, they still feel the emptiness left by the absence of their former love. The last line, "I'm still in love but you're gone," shows that the singer has accepted the reality of the situation, and while their love remains, it cannot change the outcome.

Overall, Angel Woman depicts the pain of a breakup, but also the idea that even when things go terribly wrong, there may still be aspects of a person that can be appreciated and cherished. The melancholic melody and soft arrangement of this song highlight the sadness and nostalgia that can come with the end of a relationship.

This song is a beautiful hammer. Sometimes I can’t help but imagine what if I lost or screwed things up with the love of my life. But what if I heard this song afterwards? It already brings a lump to my throat but in those circumstances it would simply break me utterly.

Just goes to show you that a song can be less than a minute and a half and say all it needs to say. That's musical brilliance.
