Cats: Memory
Andrew Lloyd Webber Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And a rose that is fading
Roses whither away like the sunflower
I yearn to turn my face to the dawn
I am waiting for the day
Midnight, not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory?
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan
Memory, all alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days, I was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again
Every street lamp
Seems to beat a fatalistic warning
Someone mutters and the street lamp gutters
And soon it will be morning
Daylight, I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn't give in when the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin
Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale cold smell of morning
The street lamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning
Touch me, it's so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun if you touch me
You'll understand what happiness is
Look
A new day has begun
In Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Memory," from the musical Cats, the singer portrays a cat named Grizabella who is reflecting on her past life. The song starts with Grizabella observing the beauty of nature and feeling a yearning to turn her face to the dawn. She then contrasts this with the midnight where not a sound is heard, and Grizabella questions if the moon has lost her memory. In this moment of silence, she contemplates how life fades like a rose or a sunflower.
As the song progresses, Grizabella's thoughts turn to her past happiness and how she longs to relive those memories. She remembers a time when she knew what happiness was and desires to let those memories live again. However, she realizes that she must wait for a new day to begin and not give up when the dawn comes. The song ends with Grizabella feeling the touch of someone who finally understands the happiness that she once knew, and a new day has begun.
Overall, "Memory" is a heartfelt song about the importance of memories, the fleeting nature of life, and the desire to relive moments of happiness. Through evocative imagery and a haunting melody, the song conveys a sense of longing and nostalgia.

Memory
Turn your face to the moonlight
Let your memory lead you
Open up enter in
If you find there
The meaning of what happiness is
Then a new life will begin
Memory
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember
The time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory
Live again
Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale cold smell of morning
A street lamp dies
Another night is over
Another day is dawning
Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn't give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin
Sunlight through the trees in summer
Endless masquerading
Like a flower as the dawn is breaking
The memory is fading
Touch me
It's so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me
You'll understand what happiness is
Look, a new day

Sometimes, our cat is just meowing at the middle of the night with no apparent reason. I just pretend that she's just singing Memory. Well, probably she is.

The fact that this song is about an old unwanted cat that just wants to be touched and loved makes it so sad. You can imagine she had a loving home and was then discarded. Those are the happy memories she refers to. Now each day she hopes she'll find that happiness again only for the day to end without it. Also, it's a message not to overlook the senior cat with the matted fur. Give them a chance. Touch them and YOU'LL see what happiness is and the happy memories will live again for that cat as they'll once again be loved. 😭😭😭😭 #adoptdontshop
