Also respect to the choreographer, because the way you sculpt a ten-minute dance break without exhausting your performers or boring the audience is to break it into beats like this, giving each group a good moment to show off, then a moment to step back and catch their breath, and thus it plays out in a way that's interesting but also a good use of resources.

(Oddly enough, I just mentally compared it to the scripting of Mad Max: Fury Road, which is basically a movie-long car chase, but where the action is cut into beats in such a way that it's not same-y and boring. Good directors and choreographers figure out how to section off and show new details of a thing that might otherwise just put the audience to sleep.)

While I agree that the movie choreo looked really cool under certain angles, some parts of it actually misinterpreted a few of the character's personalities. Rum Tum Tugger is actually a really good example of that. I'd explain, but then this comment would just get much longer. Anyway, whether it was because of Hooper or Andy Blankenbuehler (the choreographer), I don't know. Although considering that Andy also wrote the 2016 Revivals choreo and that seems to have a pretty good grasp of the character's one way or the other, I'm pretty sure that it was Hooper.

@SCOUTART Funnily, I find that two of the worst parts of the movie is in the added plot and the presentation of the dance numbers. Adding that basic narrative aspect distracts the audience from the original intent of the show, which is to sit back and enjoy the spectacle, and only tempts its audience to spot all the holes and unexplained parts in the plot. Meanwhile, I find the visual presentation of the film a big mess. Especially for dance numbers like the Jellicle Ball, there is little focus on the actual dancing, when the camera either uses too many wide shots, shot so far away you can barely see the silhouette of the dancers let alone details in movement and expression, or cuts away from the dance too frequently too give us reaction shots from Victoria or Old D. It is not a film that really cares about the dance.

Victoria and Plato. My Lord. They’re so good. And I swear, this is why I love writing with nonhuman characters and cultures. You can have a race - cats, or rabbits (Watership Down), or whatever - and you can write them with this instinctual one-mindedness that you can’t give to humans. Victoria’s no longer a kitten, she’s beautiful, she shows off, and she takes a mate. Its natural. It’s simple, and you don’t have to worry about writing a typical romance, when it would interfere with the story or bog down the plot. Humans (maybe mostly the writer types, who knows) are so self-conscious and awkward and we have so many finicky rules about interacting with one another so distantly, it’s refreshing to see something like the Jellicle Ball where everyone’s comfortably in sync.

Headcanon: The Jellicle Ball dance didn't always exist, Old Deuteronomy allowed it so cats who didn't want to sing had a chance to perform to and with the other Jellicles. This is why Victoria, Quaxo and Tumblebrutus are featured heavily, and always when the Old Deuteronomy tune is playing. It's also why Old Deuteronomy joins in in certain parts, he's very proud of his creation and wants to join in the fun.

I went to see this when I was 10. I'm 37 now and still remember how in awe I felt! Maybe because i was 10, but the props.. oversized gigantic cornflake boxes, or massive boots being thrown on stage. I laughed but my nan said " well imagine if you were a little cat, that's what it would look like." I love the music too, it just captures the personalities of different cats. Playful, moody, melodramatic.
The movie they brought our recently is rubbish. Such a thing has to be on stage, it takes you in completely.

It's never too late to catch the stage version, I guess. It took me a long time, but Cats were never among the first choices of going to a musical, since I figured "a bunch of dancing cats" surely wasn't for me. After seeing the 2019 movie, which I enjoyed, I thought I would give it a chance, since it would be easier for me to understand the plot of the musical (as English isn't my native tongue). Saw a touring version last year, and started to watch these clips from the 1998 movie. Now, I watch several clips each night and I do realize that the 1998 version is so far above the 2019 version, it's crazy.

Love at first sight - I'll admit it, I didn't understand the musical right away either, but I did understand one thing: the nature of the enchanting Victoria. She outshines any other cat, captures any show, captures any fantasy.

Why? Maybe it's because of Victoria's metaphorical character, a snow-white young cat in the midst of a garbage dump, gifted with never seen terpsichorean powers, the quiet manner and name of a great monarch with a radiant aura that makes even the Jellicle Moon to appear pale; this white cat who, free from suspicion and a clouded view of the past, welcomes the glamor cat.

But no, it's not just her pure appearance, but also her distinct movements that make every wonderful dance of any of the cats even more perfect. I've seen so many shows, trying to sit up front or at least close to the entrances to get a close moment with her as she walks by. Oh, Victoria, I love you. 🥰

I did Cats Abridged in 2017 (I played Munkustrap, and it was literally a lifelong dream come true!) and this (or, well, a shortened version of it lol) was the Act 1 Finale, and honestly, I feel like it's a far stronger A1F than Memory Prelude. If you wanna have two lots of Memory, replace Moments of Happiness with it, have the older cats scare her off, have the cast relax to the same music that plays after MoH, then go straight into Jemima/Siliabub singing Daylight 🤷‍♂️

1:12 Something as simple as this arm movement is very interesting to me. All these dancers came from different productions so I wonder if the execution of movements are slightly different everywhere you go. Some straighten their arm and lift it just above shoulder level (Jemima and Electra). Others keep this movement quite small and low (Bumbalurina).

It just hit me that half of this dance is basically a mating dance, and the scene at 4:34 is the younger cats breaking into their first heat and that's why their behavior suddenly changes. .-.

I used to make my mom & sisters watch this with me nonstop lol. I remember we were in the VHS section at like Target or something & I picked it bc I could read “CATS” & then I got the Rugrats Movie.

Truly awful editing was done by so-called professionals, when putting together this film. Constant and irritating changes in viewing angles makes it difficult to get into the dancing. There's no doubt the dancers performed splendidly. They deserved better than the hatchet job done by the backroom team.
