The Water Rises
Andrew London Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I've gone, wandered to the brink
See now, I don't know what became of me
All the same...
Wrote you a line just to tell you how I've been
Oh, where did the days go?
Honestly I'm not the same man, the man I was then
The water rises,
The wind keeps blowing, the waves keep coming
The water rises between you and me.
[Verse]
And just like you said, my life ain't so wonderful
Oh, how can I relate? Standing in the line?
Waiting for grace, waiting for a light to shine? Well...
[Chorus:]
The water rises
The wind keeps blowing, the waves keep coming
The water rises
Oh, where we're going the angels are singing
The water rises...
[Bridge:]
Days, ebb and flowing
But I just don't know if the
Months that go are
Stealing my time
And still, I believe it
The moment is fleeting
Treading the current
To keep my head high, well,
[Chorus:]
The water rises
The wind keeps blowing, the waves keep coming
The water rises
Oh, where we're going the angels will be singing
The water rises between you and me.
The song ‘The Water Rises’ by Andrew London is a powerful and introspective ballad focusing on the metaphorical barriers that can arise between individuals over time. The opening verse expresses the confusion and alienation of losing oneself in the chaos of life. The singer has become disconnected and unrecognizable to himself, lost to the currents of time. The line states that “the water rises between you and me,” with the rising water representing the emotional distance between him and someone he cares about, a distance he is unsure he can bridge.
The second verse reflects on the comments of another, a feeling of not being able to relate to their experiences. The singer feels as if he is standing on the outside, waiting for something to happen, waiting for a light to shine that will show him the way forward. The chorus repeats the main theme of the song, with the water continuing to rise, and the wind blowing and the waves coming on in. The imagery suggests the unstoppable forces that can sometimes separate people, something beyond our control.
The bridge further expands on the idea of time moving on while feeling adrift, and the idea of never getting back the moments that have already passed. The final chorus brings the song full circle with the repetition of the earlier chorus, while adding the idea of something greater at work, hints of angels and a sense of destiny or fate. All in all, this song speaks to the universal feelings of losing oneself, of feeling disconnected from those we care about, and striving to keep our heads above water when everything around us seems to conspire against us.

Months that go are
The months that pass
Stealing my time

Each moment is brief and fleeting

Navigating through the current
To keep my head high, well,
To keep a positive outlook despite it all

Wherever we're heading, there's something hopeful to look forward to
The water rises between you and me.
We're growing apart and there's nothing we can do to stop it
