Goodbye Humanosaurus
Andy Partridge/XTC Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just take your suitcase from my wardrobe
And pack it full of guns and bombs
Then CFC's and germ-war microbes
We've been destroying stuff too long
And there's no home for us
Just you raise your voice in chorus
Goodbye humanosaurus
They'll teach at schools we were cold-blooded
And that we spoke and threw a turd
How we all drowned as litter flooded
We treated Earth like it was dirt
And so I must implore us
Don't go near that exit door-us (Doris)
Goodbye humanosaur
Be no more us

They were big with brains the size of a [burger bap]
History has got 'em down as a homo sap
All that now remains
Are the overgrown fast lanes
And junk food cartons
They'd adore us if we'd just sweep up the floor-us
Goodbye humanosaur
Clean the shore

No more war
Humanosaurus

Overall Meaning

The song "Goodbye Humanosaurus" by Andy Partridge of XTC appears to be a cautionary tale about the destructive power and consequences of human beings on the environment. The lyrics suggest that we have been destroying the earth through the use of weapons, pollutants, and general neglect, leading to a time when humans will be remembered as cold-blooded, littering, and violent creatures. The chorus urges us to leave this behavior behind, so that we can avoid our own self-destruction and save the planet from further damage.

The imagery in the lyrics is striking, with references to guns, bombs, CFCs, and germ-war microbes. The song suggests that humans have been treating the earth like dirt and that we will ultimately pay the price for our destructive behavior. The title of the song itself, "Goodbye Humanosaurus," implies that perhaps we are nearing the end of our time on the planet and that we need to change our ways before it's too late.

Overall, "Goodbye Humanosaurus" is a poignant reminder of the impact of human behavior on the environment and a call to action to change course before it's too late.

Millennial Fair

Early version of Then She Appeared?

Jason Paul Elder

Yes, Millennial Fair! Coincidentally, I just got done writing this on another page:

It's not so unusual for an early incarnation of a chord progression, line, or approach to turn up in another song (it happens with my own songwriting as well at times), as I can hear the pre-chorus of "Then She Appeared" from 0:36 to 0:46 (the lyrics being: I was a little frightened, flying with my senses heightened). This makes for an interesting alternative existence of this musical segment, and further shows the expanse in which Andy, seemingly, has a universe of melodies throughout his mind which settle into place elsewhere, even if originally born within a different state of mind at first.
