Known for honest, self-reflective songs as well as captivating lyrical works of fiction and an intimate live show, Shauf is considered one of the most intriguing emerging songwriters around.
His release, The Bearer of Bad News, explores themes of uncertainty, curiosity and spirituality. “I think spirituality is a part of life whether you are religious or not, even if you’re just superstitious. You can’t really get away from the fact that we don’t know everything.” The unsettling stories told on The Bearer of Bad News came as Shauf wrote both at home and on the road. Musically, the record took shape in a modest home studio in his parents’ basement in Regina, Canada, where Shauf spent 4 years recording and producing each song himself. “Spending all this time allowed me a lot of freedom in the ways I arranged the songs. I could work on a drum part for a whole day, or play piano for 2 hours without figuring anything out and be okay with that.”
Bearer is 11 songs built from the sounds of a weathered piano, the warm tone of his guitar’s aged strings, and a clarinet. Shauf is one-of-a-kind voice and dark, literate storytelling.
Catch your eye
Andy Shauf Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
I thought it'd happen through
A friend of a friend but it never did
I need to meet you
I need to catch your eye
I thought I saw you in the grocery store
I followed you all the way to the door
I need to meet you
I need to catch your eye
Words under my breath
Float through the ceiling
I need to meet you
I need to catch your eye
In the first verse, the singer of the song is expressing their uncertainty about a situation. They had hoped that something would happen, possibly a romantic connection, through a mutual acquaintance, but it never materialized. The singer is eager to meet the person they are interested in, and they emphasize the desire to catch their eye. This could imply that they want to make a strong impression or attract the attention of the other person.
In the second verse, the singer recounts a specific encounter they had with the person they are interested in. They believed to have seen them in a grocery store and decided to follow them to the door. However, despite their efforts, the person never noticed or acknowledged them. This further fuels the singer's determination to meet them and catch their eye. The emphasis on following the person suggests a sense of longing or fascination, as they are willing to go to great lengths to be noticed.
The chorus of the song is reflective of the singer's inner thoughts and desires. The words they mutter under their breath seem to echo through the ceiling. This imagery suggests a sense of frustration and longing that is building up within the singer. They are consumed with the desire to meet the person they are infatuated with and catch their eye. The repetition of the phrase "I need to meet you, I need to catch your eye" emphasizes the urgency and importance of this desire.
Overall, "Catch Your Eye" by Andy Shauf portrays the singer's longing to connect with someone they are interested in. The lyrics depict their frustration with failed attempts to cross paths and ignite a mutual attraction. The singer's desperation to meet the person and catch their eye is conveyed through vivid imagery and repetitive declarations. This song captures the emotions of unrequited love, the yearning for connection, and the longing to make oneself noticed.

The situation's unclear, I guess
I thought it'd happen through a friend of a friend
But it never did
I need to meet you
I need to catch your eye
I thought I saw you in the grocery store
I followed you all the way to the door
But you never did turn
I need to meet you
I need to catch your eye
Words under my breath
Float through the ceiling
I need to meet you
I need to catch your eye

Criminally underrated artist, possibly one of the most talented songwriters and musicians I've had the pleasure of listening to. Captures the essence of 21st century life perfectly.

Ugh this man can do no wrong. I feel like I haven’t heard his vocal delivery quite like this before? I love the backing vox/harmony of “I need to meet you, I need to catch your eye”. So beautiful.
