Marseilles
Angel City Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Bought me a box of french cigars
Bought me a black beret
Get my french from a girl next door
Teaching me night and day
Got me thinking `bout the south of France
Vis-a-vis vous
Pack my suitcase, take a chance
Got nothing to lose

Gimme the sound of the rolling dice
Gimme a whiskey, don't think twice
Deal me the card that takes my blues away
Take me away to Marseilles

Fast train, jet plane, money to burn
Don't ask the reason why
Drinkin' champagne, playin' it cool
Don't even have to try, baby

Gimme the sound of the rolling dice
Gimme a whiskey, don't think twice
Deal me the card that takes my blues away
Take me away to Marseilles

(Solo 1)

Take me away to Marseilles

Fast train, jet plane, money to burn
Don't ask the reason why
Drinkin' champagne, playin' it cool
Don't even have to try
I'm still thinkin' bout the south of France
Vis-a-vis vous
Pack my suitcase, take a chance
Got nothing to lose

Gimme the sound of the rolling dice
Gimme a whiskey, don't think twice
Deal me the card that takes my blues away
Take me away to Marseilles
Take me away to Marseilles
M-m-m-m-m Marseilles
Take me away to Marseilles

(Solo 2)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Angel City's song "Marseilles" tell the story of someone seeking an escape from their mundane life. The singer buys French cigars and a black beret, and learns French from a girl next door. They're thinking about the south of France and decide to pack their suitcase and take a chance. The chorus expresses the desire to escape and have fun, with lyrics like "Take me away to Marseilles" and "Gimme a whiskey, don't think twice."

The second verse reinforces the theme of escaping reality, as the singer takes a fast train or jet plane with money to burn. They drink champagne, play it cool, and don't have to try. The song ends with a final plea to "Take me away to Marseilles," symbolizing the singer's longing for adventure and a break from their normal life.

I saw these guys in 1981 at the old Paramount theatre in Portland Oregon, I bought front row center tickets from a scalper on the sidewalk out front. Missing Persons was the opening act. That was one kick ass concert!!! Thanks for posting. What memories.

That sounds like it would have been an amazing show!!!

@tianthee

Awesome. What a shame they didn't have more overseas popularity. I've however been lucky to see them live 6 times.

That some cool shit this song had me hooked when first hearing years ago because it had that AC/DC sound. Listening to a quiet riot song it triggered me to ask Google what 80's rockband had the lyrics Marseille and boom Angel City pops up. I can share a like experience didn't have tickets to an AC/DC concert in Oakland California we heard about it the night before , we got there we bought our tickets on the street from a scalper opening band prism ,night ranger then AC/DC I was up front almost center what a show from the album "If you want blood you got it"! I can almost hear him singing it as I type this.
