In the early 1980s, Stone (as 'Angie B'), was a member of The Sequence, the first major female hip-hop group. They had a hit in 1980 with "Funk You Up". She then worked with Mantronix, before teaming up and performing vocals and saxophone for Lenny Kravitz.
Angie Stone emerged during the 1990's as part of hip-hop/R&B trio Vertical Hold which released the popular single "Seems You're Much Too Busy" as well as two albums: A Matter Of Time (June 1993) and Head First (1995).
In 1996, she teamed up with Gerry Deveaux (Lenny Kravitz's cousin from The Bahamas) and together with Charlie Mole they formed Devox. One album received a Japanese-only release including Stone-penned or co-written material.
Angie Stone shared song-writing credits on D'Angelo's first two studio album's (1995 - Brown Sugar and 2000 - Voodoo) as well as providing backing vocals on tour with him.
She released her first solo album, Black Diamond, released on 28 September 1999 via Arista Records. She has since also released, via Clive Davis' J Records, Mahogany Soul on October 16, 2001 and Stone Love on July 6, 2004.
Much of Angie Stone's solo material has a significant hip-hop influence and features notable samples. For example, her first solo single, 1999's "No More Rain (In This Cloud)" samples Gladys Knight & the Pips' 1972 "Neither One Of Us (Want To Be The First To Say Goodbye)", and 2002 "Wish I Didn't Miss You" samples The O'Jays' 1972 "Back Stabbers".
Angie Stone sings the theme song for the UPN sitcom Girlfriends.
She has two children, a daughter and a son. The son is the child of neo-soul singer D'Angelo, whom she dated during the 1990's.

Stoned Love
Angie Stone Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It will light up
It will surely light up darkened worlds
If you just believe
Stoned love
Stoned love
Stoned love
A love for each other will bring fighting to an end
Forgiving one another, time after time doubt creeps in
But like the sun lights up the sky with a message from above
Oh yeah, I find no other greater symbol of love
Yeah, don't ya hear the wind blowing
Stoned love
Oh yeah, I tell ya I ain't got no other
Stoned love
Oh yeah
And life is so short, put the present time at hand
Oh yeah, and if you're young at heart, rise up and take your stand
And to the man on whose shoulder the world must depend
I pray for peace and love, amen
Oh, can't ya feel it
Stoned love
I tell ya I ain't got no other
Stoned love
Oh yeah
If the war 'tween our nations passed, oh yeah
Will the love 'tween our brothers and sisters last?
On and on and on and on and
Stoned love
Oh yeah
I tell ya I ain't got no other
Stoned love
Can't ya, can't ya, can't ya, can't ya, can't ya feel it
Stoned love
Oh yeah stoned, stoned, stoned, stoned
Stoned love
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Stoned love
Oh yeah, yeah
Stoned love
The lyrics to Angie Stone's song Stoned Love speak of the power of love to bring people together, heal division, and create a better world. The first verse begins with the idea that love has the ability to light up the darkest corners of the world if one simply believes it can. The repetition of "Stoned love" throughout the song echoes this sentiment, suggesting that love can provide a sense of grounding or peace even when one feels lost or disconnected.
The second verse expands on this idea, suggesting that forgiveness is an essential component of love. Doubt may creep in from time to time, but by treating one another with grace, love can persevere. The singer expresses the belief that there is no greater symbol of love than the sun, which lights up the entire sky and offers a clear message from a divine power.
The final verse speaks of the importance of love in the face of war and conflict. If the world could overcome the struggles between nations, the singer wonders if love between individuals could be maintained as well. Overall, the song suggests that love is the key to creating a more peaceful, just, and connected world.
