The band has released fourteen albums: "Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished" (2000), "Danse Manatee" (2001), "Campfire Songs" (2003), "Here Comes the Indian" (2003), "Sung Tongs" (2004), "Feels" (2005), "Strawberry Jam" (2007), "Merriweather Post Pavilion" (2009), "Centipede Hz" (2012), "Painting With" (2016), "Tangerine Reef" (2018), "Crestone" (2021), "Time Skiffs" (2022), and "Isn't It Now?" Prior to "Here Comes the Indian", the group's albums were not credited to the band name "Animal Collective" but instead to "Avey Tare & Panda Bear" (for "Spirit"), "Avey Tare, Panda Bear & Geologist" (for "Danse") and "Campfire Songs" (for "Campfire Songs").
The band members met in school and started recording together in various forms of collaboration from a young age. Although the band is often classified as psych folk or noise rock, it is hard to define the Animal Collective sound as they often experiment with diverse styles and ideas from album to album. The group also runs the record label Paw Tracks on which they have released their own material as well as material by artists such as Ariel Pink, Terrestrial Tones, and The Peppermints. Paw Tracks' latest signee is Tickley Feather, with whom the band recently toured.

My mind's begun to find
Early peculiarities are how it defines time
And there are turkeys out the window
That I appreciate
There's plastic like a barge somewhere
That's got no docking date
Someone in the lobby
Is dressed down just like me
An infant won the lottery
But really it was he
With a pocket full of ruffies
A pocket full of teeth
Some people call that pleasure
And some people call that grief
At the Exxon they were confused if I was American
And so I left offended with a pack of M&Ms
Well, I've been driving for a long while
Spent some time in a Cherokee
Learning things
Out there in Black Mountain sprouts education seed
But you can learn a lot just talk a walk above Montreat
They gathered 'round the easel and spelled Community
I go looking for my teachers and wondering what that means
There'll be lots of lonely mailboxes when language disappears
And people on the subway think so far to be so near
I smile from a screen you touch I'm waiting on the bed
Listening to voices talk about where I am headed
People hid out for a long while
In the hills of Cullowhee

Someone's at a grill top
And someone is Tom Hanks
Suckered into party games
And building words for Leisure
Here it is eleven and there it is nineteen
You're missing all my breakfast and
I'm missing your evenings
Wish we'd been touching for a short while
Driving back from Cherokee
Dreaming things
The lyrics to Animal Collective's song "Cherokee" explore the concept of time and perception, and how our experiences and interactions shape our understanding of the world around us. The song starts off with the singer feeling out of sync with time, with early peculiarities defining how they perceive it. The mention of turkeys and a barge somewhere with no docking date highlights the randomness and unpredictability of life.
The lyrics then shift to a scene in a lobby, where the singer observes someone dressed down like them and mentions an infant winning the lottery, suggesting that life's fortunes can be both arbitrary and unexpected. The mention of a pocket full of ruffies and teeth signifies the darker side of pleasure and pain, with different people having different interpretations.
As the song progresses, the singer explores different locations and encounters. They mention an experience at an Exxon gas station where their identity was questioned, leaving them offended. They also talk about driving through Cherokee and spending time in Black Mountain, where they seek education and connection in their surroundings. The mention of loneliness, subway musings, and waiting on a bed shows a longing for connection and meaning in life.
The song concludes with references to party games, Tom Hanks, and missing each other's presence. It touches on the fleeting nature of dreams and the desire for closeness and shared experiences.
