Prester John
Animal Collective Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Let me change up before it is too late
There's a broken stick
There's a wrinkle on a leaf, it's dried out
Was a good long run
With a world of good intentions by it
It's the end of this
To the end of it
To the end of holding hands without it
With a little lift
With a passion for a lift to give it
Here's a little tip
Had a look at what is really living
Treating everyday
As an image of a moment that's passed
Treating everyday
As an image of a moment that's passed
Prester John is breaking down, down
His heart is breaking down, down
Prester John is breaking down, down
His heart is breaking down, down
Prester John is breaking down, down
His heart is breaking down, down
Prester John is breaking down, down
His heart is breaking down, down
Treating everyday (Prester John is breaking down, down)
As an image of a moment that's passed
His heart is breaking down, down
Treating everyday as an image of a moment that's passed
The lyrics of Animal Collective's song Prester John speak to the idea of change, both in the individual and in the world around them. The opening lines, "Let me get it here, let me change up before it is too late," reveal a sense of urgency in the desire for personal transformation. The mention of a broken stick and a dried out leaf serves as a metaphor for the impermanence and fragility of life, urging the listener to make meaningful changes while they still can. The lyrics also explore the idea of letting go, as indicated by the lines "It's the end of this, it's the end of holding hands without it," suggesting a release of something that was once important.
These themes are further reinforced by the repeated refrain of "treating everyday as an image of a moment that's passed." The idea of living in the present, or rather, treating every moment as though it may be the last, is something that many people struggle with. Prester John, the titular character, is symbolic of this struggle. The repetition of "his heart is breaking down" serves to emphasize the emotional weight of this internal conflict.
Overall, the lyrics of Prester John offer a poignant and insightful reflection on the importance of change and the struggle to live in the present moment.

This is so beautiful. This is the first time I've seen them all four of
them making music together with their faces visible, they're such precious human beings. It's especially
impactful as I think this is their first release since the pandemic hit.
Animal Collective addresses themes of genuine emotional expression, pure joyful love, the act of awareness,
the raw carnal experience of being an animal, the confusion that comes
with being born, the absurdity of existing, the desperate helplessness of loss, and just the
overwhelming simple ecstasy of being alive in a way that I've never heard
from any other musical experience. They know what it's like to be me,
and I know what it's like to be them because we are all going through
the human experience together. We wake up under the same sky and we sit
on the same warm rock together. I would love to talk to them and trade
poems.
I love all of you. You are all members of my community. I feel an
indescribable camaraderie with every living thing on this planet, like
we owe everything we have to each other. No matter what happens to you
in your future, I hope you enjoy sharing this planet and this life.
