A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square
Anita O’Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That certain night
The night we met
There was magic abroad in the air
There were angels dining at the Ritz
And a nightingale sang in Berkeley square

I may be right I may be wrong
But I'm perfectly willing to swear
That when you turned and smiled at me
A nightingale sang in Berkeley square

The moon that lingered over London town
Poor puzzled moon he wore a frown
How could he know we two were so in love
The whole damned world seemed upside down

The streets of town were paved with stars
It was such a romantic affair
And as we kissed and said goodnight
A nightingale sang in Berkeley square

How strange it was
How sweet and strange
There was never a dream to compare
To those hazy crazy nights we met
And a nightingale sang in Berkeley square

Ah this heart of mine
Loud and fast
Like a merry-go-round in a fair
We would dance cheek to cheek
And a nightingale sang in Berkeley square

The dawn came stealing up
All gold and blue
To interrupt our rendez-vous
I still remember how you smiled and said
Was that a dream or was it true?

Our homeward step was just as light
As the dancing feet of Astaire
And like an echo far away
And a nightingale sang in Berkeley square
And a nightingale sang in Berkeley square

That night in Berkeley square.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Anita O'Day's song "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" paint a picture of a magical and enchanting night. The opening lines suggest that there was something special about the night the singer and their love interest first met. The mention of angels dining at the Ritz creates a sense of grandeur and divine presence, adding to the atmosphere of beauty and wonder. The reference to a nightingale's song further enhances the romantic ambiance, symbolizing the presence of nature's harmony amidst the bustling city.

The singer acknowledges that their perception of the events might be subjective, stating, "I may be right, I may be wrong, but I'm perfectly willing to swear." This suggests that the intensity of the connection they felt with their love interest was so profound that it transcended rationality and logic. The mention of the nightingale's song returning when their love interest turned and smiled further reinforces the idea that this connection was truly extraordinary.

The lyrics describe how the moon, personified as being puzzled and wearing a frown, was unable to comprehend the deep love between the singer and their partner. This emphasizes the magnitude of their love, as it apparently defied the expectations and understanding of even celestial entities. The lyrics portray a feeling that the whole world became disoriented and out of place due to the intensity of their love, making "the whole damned world seemed upside down."

The streets of town being "paved with stars" implies that the singer saw their surroundings in an ethereal light, emphasizing the romantic nature of their encounter. The lyrics portray a romantic affair, where the singer and their love interest share a passionate kiss and bid each other goodnight. The presence of the nightingale's song during this farewell moment symbolizes the lingering beauty and enchantment of their connection.

The lyrics continue to describe the love affair as strange, yet incredibly sweet. The singer highlights the dreamlike quality of their encounters, indicating that there has never been a comparable experience. The singer's heart is described as being loud and fast, like a merry-go-round at a fair, suggesting the intensity of their emotions.

As dawn approaches, the golden and blue hues of the sky interrupt their rendezvous. Despite the interruption, the memory of their time together remains vivid. The singer recalls their love interest questioning whether their experience was a dream or reality, further emphasizing the surreal and profound nature of their connection.

Returning home, their steps are light and reminiscent of the dancing feet of Fred Astaire, evoking a sense of grace and joy. The mention of the nightingale's song echoes in the distance, reminding the singer and the listener of the captivating romance they shared.

In conclusion, "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" by Anita O'Day captures the essence of a magical and unforgettable night. Am I alone? This is my favorite version of this song. Nobody sings it more delicately. The words are like feathers coming from Anita O'Day. She was a great jazz singer, not a valued skill any more. But she does this song right.

Gotta agree!

You're definitely not alone in this one my friend

O'Day is my favorite singer of "Nightingale". I'm glad others agree. The intimacy and sweetness of her reading make the song come alive.
She recorded this again later in her career, and it's also wonderful.

Anita's personal "story" is just as remarkable as her talent. I urge fans to find the documentary about her. She is as honest and beautiful as her voice. She kicked the beast of addictions (heroin and booze) with NO rehab. If you love her already? When u hear her laugh as she discusses her life, you will fall in love with her soul, and her music will inspire u in a deeper dimension. God bless her and all of you. VJ

I met her at a club in LA when she had written her autobio and was autographing copies. At that time, she was pretty much near the end. I told her that she was the greatest, but she tried singing one song and just didn't have it anymore.

The best version of this song ever. You have to listen to the hidden clever stuff. She was great!

Shey Shannow
