In the Still of the Night
Annette Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Behind the curtain
There is you
There is me
We talk a while
And then I leave
I see you smile
As men pass by
I know you hope for work all night

In the night you're an angel

I see this guy
Don't like his face
He goes inside
He knows the place
Behind the curtain
There's you
There is he
I wait a while and then I see him leave

In the night you're an angel

Overall Meaning

In these lyrics to Annette's song "In the Still of the Night," the imagery of a hidden connection between the singer and another individual is woven throughout. The opening line, "Behind the curtain, There is you, There is me," suggests a sense of secrecy and intimacy. The curtain serves as a symbolic barrier separating the public facade from the private interactions that occur within this clandestine space. This setting creates a sense of intrigue and mystery as the two characters engage in conversation before parting ways.

As the singer departs, they notice the smile on the other person's face as they interact with passing men, hinting at a potential transactional nature to their encounter. The mention of "hope for work all night" implies a sense of desperation or reliance on external factors for survival. There is a juxtaposition between the external world bustling with activity and the hidden world behind the curtain where more personal connections are forged.

The repeated refrain "In the night you're an angel" adds a layer of complexity to the narrative. Despite the shadowy setting and potentially unsavory characters coming and going, there is a sense of grace or purity attributed to the other person. This juxtaposition between darkness and light, angelic presence amidst a potentially seedy environment, further heightens the enigmatic atmosphere of the song.

The third paragraph introduces a new character and a moment of tension as the singer observes someone they do not trust entering the same space. The contrast between the dislike for this individual's appearance and their familiarity with the location adds a sense of danger or unease. As the third party leaves, the singer is left alone once again with the original person, emphasizing the cyclical nature of their encounters in this hidden realm. Throughout the lyrics, there is a delicate balance between secrecy and revelation, allure and suspicion, creating a rich tapestry of emotions and narratives for the listener to unravel.

Bless her heart; Annette was sweet but too thirsty at times.šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

I lived there at the time when they were filming it and actually saw that scene which was very late at night.

Jimmy Paget

My mom and her friends took me to see this (thought it was the PG version; she covered my eyes during the stripper scene) when I was a little kid during this scene I leaned over and whispered, "Why is she giving him alka seltzers?" Couldnt understand why they were all laughing

Sareight

@Liz Kozlowski * saw it

I actually thought they were birth control pills when I first seen it

@Space Ace Did you actually read Jimmy's post? They were laughing at his childlike innocence for confusing condoms with alka seltzers.

Space Ace

Why would anyone laugh? This scene isn't meant to be funny.

Thatā€™s OK, she ended up getting with Ted Stryker a year or two later so all is not lost.

Contains spoilers: I thought Annette was just as pretty and nice as Stephanie..I hate the way she is treated/depicted in the movie. But I thought that at times she could be a little too desperate. I'm glad she ended up with Joey? (I think). At any rate, Tony is weird..he acts like he hates her throughout the film but when she is being hit on by his friend he gets all defensive and his ego gets hurt. Like after the disco contest they all meet up and Double JJ and Joey want to take her in the backseat of the car and Tony was all "no way", and they say "you don't care about her!!" Weird, Tony. You can't string her along! Either you care for her or no. But I think Annette is better off without him if he is going to treat her terribly.

@DAIL MCDAVID I donā€™t think Annette actually loved Tony. She thought if they got married it would give her something to show off to her sisters.
