Southern
Annie Eve Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On the sheets of a mattress bed
Flower pot filled with cigarettes
And his head resting on my chest
Heavy breaths, I knew your kind

And the ivy covered wall outside
And the way he told me how things were
Never had to guess a single thing
But with him, he was always around
With me

But I never got bored with you
I never got bored of life
And I never got tired with you
I never got tired of life

And I often think of how things were
While I work behind the bar at night
And I think of him the whole damn time
Sipping wine won't change our bind

Like a boat, your room floats in my mind
On the ocean of my memory's eye
And your body is what I've confined
In the dark, I went there blind

'Oh,' I sigh

But I never got bored with you
I never got bored of lies
And I never got tired with you
I never got tired of lies

So, I work in the bar now three times a week
And I'm with his best friend
But we hardly speak
And it's hard to find friends
In this town of mine

Oh, love
Please don't feel like you have to go
You can stay, here
And hold me from behind, fully dressed

Just so I, can try and forgive myself
For making you wait so long

Overall Meaning

In Annie Eve's song, "Southern", she tells a story of a past lover, who she reminiscences about while she's working behind the bar at night. She describes laying in bed with him, surrounded by cigarette butts in a flower pot and having his head rested on her chest as they breathe heavily. She reflects on how their relationship was, with him always being around and never having to guess a single thing. She then goes on to sing about how much she enjoyed his company, never getting bored or tired with him, despite their lies they told each other.

The chorus repeats these sentiments, with Eve saying that she never got tired of life with him, and later in the song, she expresses regret over the fact that their relationship didn't work out. She paints a vivid picture of his room, which floats in her mind like a boat on the ocean of her memories. She confesses that being with his best friend makes her feel lonely, and it's hard to find friends in her town.

In the final verse of the song, Eve begs for her past lover to stay with her, even if just to hold her from behind with their clothes on. She is trying to forgive herself for waiting so long to be with him, and she hopes that he won't leave her. The overall theme of the song seems to be about love, regret, and the lingering memories of past relationships.

I adore the music of Annie. I wish she would give us more. If she never comes back I can see Sunday 91 being spoken about in the future in the same bracket of lost artists alongside Linda Perhacs and Rodriguez. I have no idea where she went or why, I have even less idea why she isn’t enormous. Sunday 91 is simply magnificent.
Annie if you ever read any of these comments : thanks so much for your music. I shall continue to play Kid Meets World for as long as I live.
