I like how this version is framed as an argument between Tony and Riff. Here, due to the expansion of the backstory, Tony isn’t the wide eyed idealist he normally is. Realistically, he is a young man who was forced to grow up too fast after getting involved in gang violence at a young age and nearly beat a gang member to death, so he knows that the violence can be deadly, and with a gun it can be worse. Here, he is desperately pleading with Riff, his immature wide eyed best friend, not to use the gun, but fails due to Riff’s immaturity and stubbornness, as he is still a child who has NO idea what damage a gun can actually do to people.

I also like how Tony’s voice is slightly deeper than Riff’s here, really helps to contrast their personalities.

WOW, AWESOME insights on a STELLAR song and even more stellar INTERPRETATION of it from two VERY fine, INCREDIBLE Actors and true Musical ARTISTS, Ansel Elgort and Mike Faist!!
Bravo to BOTH of you on a TERRIFIC job; SO well done!!
They, along with the INCREDIBLE Cinematography, Direction and Music, etc., make this song exciting, heart racing, heartbreaking, touching and tragic, all at the same time and ESPECIALLY in regards to the Events that occur after it and as a RESULT of Riff's and the Jets actions who appear in this particular song and their stubbornness, ignorance and immaturity and refusal to grow up, by managing to take the gun away from Tony and refusal to see reason and the ultimate CONSEQUENCES of actually HAVING the gun in the FIRST place, like TONY himself fully realizes and in vain, tries VERY hard to prevent anything bad from happening with the gun, or the Rumble and the whole tragic scope of it!
It's TRULY devastating that none of these ignorant, selfish Jets can see, or realize, that Tony is trying to PREVENT the violence from happening, not ADD to it!
If they at least were capable, or open-minded enough to see TONY's point of view at the VERY least and the very important value of allowing TONY to grow up and take the gun away from Riff/the other Jets, NUMEROUS tragedies and unnecessary Deaths COULD have been PREVENTED!! 😣😩🥺☹️😥😭

I agree with everything that you said except the last part.

Tony's voice is slightly deeper than Riff's. There's no question about that.
I don't believe it helps to contrast their personalities as much as you think. You can probably get an actor with the same deep voice as Tony, and still get the same effect with the character. Riff's personality remains the same regardless of how deep his voice is.
Perhaps, this can be argued better.
I won't deny that Riff's voice sounds a little young, but so did Harry Lime's in "Home Alone." Marv had the deeper voice, but still managed to "sound" more immature than Harry, who had the higher voice.
All this is probably trivial, but hey, we both loved the movie. 😁🤘🏼

I feel the scene preceding this song does a magnificent job of showing the psyche of the Jets.

The boys running around pretending to shoot at each other shows a childlike quality to their character. However, the fact Riff is pointing a loaded gun at his friends with reckless abandon also shows how careless they are and that they have little regard for life.

It's also worth noting that when Riff points the gun at Tony (albeit with potential intent as he was surprised), Tony's first reaction is to raise his hands in surrender. It could be nothing, but at the same time it could be a way of showing that Tony has really matured and values his life a lot more than his old friends.

This was not a scene where I thought they would put Cool, but it works very well.

I love the irony of Riff singing it in the musical, but I couldn't imagine Russ Tamblyn singing it in the original film. I love where it is in the original too, but giving it to Tony as a warning to Riff about the rumble is a genius move.

This is probably my favourite scene in the new film. It was unexpected, but you can really feel the tension and the sense of impending violence. The cast were amazing and think Mike Faist deserves an Oscar for his performance. I loved the first film, but in this one, you can really see the portrayal of gang culture and the lack of hope that they embody.

This rendition is better. Without trying to spoil anything, Tony (Ansel Elgort) singing this to his Jets, essentially flipped the original script, especially some of the lines! The way how they choregraphed this piece was also great!

@Susan LewisI researched it and found out that the two Actors, Ansel Elgort, who Portrayed Tony and Mike Faist who Portrayed Riff and both BRILLIANTLY in my humble, personal opinion, each spent MONTHS together, on end, something like 6 MONTHS total, with a "fake" temporary Set, going through their moves and all the nuances of this very important song and perfecting every INCH of it, so by the time the Cameras actually rolled, it was FLAWLESS in EVERY way!!
They CERTAINLY achieved that feat......and THEN some!!
A HUGE kudos to BOTH of them and everyone involved in this HIGHLY challenging Scene, both in FRONT of and BEHIND the Camera!!

Wow. People liked this better than the original? Too much nostalgia for me. Nothing can compare to the energy of the original. But I do like how this new one made the song a part of the plot--even if they had to change the plot slightly to make it work.

I think this might be my favorite scene. The masculinity of it all is pretty amazing. I love the fact it’s basically two guys going at it with 4 Jets surround them. Kicking dirt and everything. They wrote Cool to be a duel btw Tony and Riff gives the song meaning.

I like how this scene reflects Tony and Riff's friendship: Riff likes to live his life more dangerously and is brash, so Tony tries to get through to Riff with a game of Keep-Away. He wants to show Riff the consequences of fighting against the Sharks and why he reformed, while Riff is too cocky to listen.

With that being said, I myself wonder what it would have been like if they did the song like in the 1957 Original Broadway version. For those that don't know, in the 1957 Original Broadway version Riff sang the song before the war council at Doc's to calm the Jets down, who were eager to fight immediately. I could imagine Mike Faist doing the original version of Cool, it seems like this is his type of song, compared to Russ Tamblyn's more goofy style of playing Riff in the 1961 film, in which Gee, Officer Krupke! suited him more.

That was very well done with both Actors.....but ABSOLUTELY heartbreaking at the same time!! 😭
Mike Faist's brutal "POW", at the very end of the song, basically "puts the nail on the coffin" and Ansel Elgort's single, gutwrenching, devastating tear, brings everything full circle......and tragically spells the beginning of the end!

I looked into it and researched it and found out that to get this whole important song and vital Scene in the Movie PERFECT and FLAWLESS, these two main Actors spent about 6 MONTHS on a fake, temporary Set, so by the time the Cameras actually rolled, they were COMPLETELY prepared to do it perfectly and flawlessly, which they CERTAINLY did, THAT'S for sure!!

I think having this song take place BEFORE the rumble makes more sense. It seems like a song meant for Tony to chastise and reason with Riff and try and get the rest of the Jets to call off the rumble.

All I know is if we take your route for the mourning scene, it does have the potential to be more powerful.

I understand, and it’s hard for me to put much blame on Spielberg since he’s put so many incredible performances on film, I more so put the blame on him casting Ansel because he could’ve had anyone he wanted I’m sure. A great director can’t fix everything, he only had what Ansel was willing to give him. You can coach an actor until blue in the face to pull out what you want from them but it’s still their choice at the end of the day on what to give. It’s not an easy job in the slightest, it’s terrifying to always be vulnerable to the world.

The camera isn’t something you hide from, it’s supposed to be allowed to view every pore and nuance of an emotion, actors are supposed to lay everything bare for us to absorb through the lens. Hiding from it is shame as an actor, a lack of confidence in his choices so he doesn’t want us to see that hesitance. Just because an artist takes an approach doesn’t always mean it’s the right one. You’re right, not everyone mourns the same way, but to be widowed especially at such a young age is a heavy toll on anyone, and as an audience we need to see that. It might not be sobbing and screaming but it needs to be SOMETHING that properly demonstrates the severity of the moment. Ansel didn’t do that, he took the easy way out, he didn’t dig deep enough to present something true. Do I think he was lazy in his choices the entire film? No not at all, I don’t see anyone here saying that he was outright terrible in the film, but that specific moment just seemed too big for him where he currently is as a performer. I could tell it scared him, and the audience should never feel that fear or hesitance, it’s immersion breaking.

Looking forward to seeing this, but I just watched the 1961 version of "Cool" and I can tell even without seeing the dancing,
it's a weak attempt imo. I wonder why the took out all the vocal interplay between verses. GO! Crazy! Crazy!! GO!

I firmly believe Tony, (Ansel Elgort), didn't, because up until pretty much the very end of the song/Scene, he had hope that Riff, or even some more of the other, tougher Jets in the scene, would give up and let Tony dispose of the gun properly, return it, pawn it off, etc.; (which heartbreakingly turned out to be futile)!
Plus, Tony probably actually didn't think Riff would go through with keeping the gun, unfortunately wrestling it away from Tony and figured that Riff and/or the Jets surrounding him in this powerful song, would realize their SHEER foolishness and ignorance and give up the gun completely!
