Dead Man's Eyes
Apocalyptica Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A narrow path through hallowed grounds
A silent walk among the clouds
A pile of stones hidden in the pine
Only seen through dead man's eyes

Autumn leaves turn brandy wine
Fall and dance in the wind outside
A shadow wanders though the fog
Searching for the light it lost

I'm not afraid
Because I'm not alone
She's waiting there
To carry me home

A lifetime written in his weathered red face
Every triumph, every fall from grace
Another winters come and gone
It won't be long, it won't be long ohh oh oh

I'm not afraid
Because I'm not alone
She's waiting there
To carry me home

I'm coming home
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
I'm coming home

I'm coming home
I'm coming home (I'm coming home)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Dead Man's Eyes" by Apocalyptica paint a haunting and introspective picture of someone walking through a cemetery, reflecting on life and death. The opening lines describe a narrow path through sacred grounds, symbolizing the passage between life and death. The silent walk among the clouds suggests a sense of spiritual transcendence, as if the singer is floating above the earthly realm.

The mention of a pile of stones hidden in the pine and only seen through dead man's eyes implies a connection with the deceased. It could represent the legacy and memories left behind by those who have passed away, visible only to those who have experienced death. This imagery creates a mystical and eerie atmosphere.

As the lyrics continue, the focus shifts to the changing seasons and the ephemeral nature of life. The reference to autumn leaves turning brandy wine and dancing in the wind outside signifies the passage of time and the inevitability of change. The shadow wandering through the fog could represent the lingering presence of lost loved ones, desperately searching for the light they once possessed.

The chorus expresses a sense of comfort and assurance. The singer claims not to be afraid because they are not alone. The mention of "she" waiting to carry them home implies the presence of a guiding spirit or guardian angel. This presence serves as a source of solace and support, easing the fear of death and offering the promise of a peaceful afterlife.

In the second verse, the lyrics delve deeper into the concept of time and its impact on an individual's life. The weathered red face suggests a person who has weathered many experiences and challenges. Every triumph and fall from grace is etched into their visage, highlighting the inevitability of both success and failure.

The mention of winter coming and going further emphasizes the cyclical nature of life. It reflects the fleeting nature of existence and reminds the listener that it won't be long before their own journey reaches its end. However, in this awareness of mortality, there is also a sense of anticipation and acceptance. The repetition of "I'm coming home" in the closing lines suggests a readiness to embrace the afterlife and reunite with loved ones.

Overall, "Dead Man's Eyes" captures the contemplation of mortality, the interconnectedness of life and death, and the comfort found in the presence of a guiding spirit.

A new path through hallowed ground
A silent walk among the clouds
A pile of stones hidden in the pine
Only seen through dead man’s eyes…

Autumn leaves turn brandy wine
Fall and dance in the wind outside
A shadow wanders though the fog
Searching for the light it lost

I’m not afraid
Because I’m not alone
She’s waiting there
To carry me home

A lifetime written in his weathered face
Every triumph, every fall from grace
Another winters come and gone
It won’t be long…

I’m not afraid
Because I’m not alone
She’s waiting there
To carry me home

I’m coming home,
I’m coming home.

Um caminho estreito através de locais sagrados
Uma caminhada silenciosa entre as nuvens
Uma pilha de pedras escondida no pinheiro
Só visto através dos olhos do homem morto
As folhas de outono transformadas em vinho-conhaque
Caem e dançam do vento lá fora

Certain songs you fall so much in love with that you can put on loop and not get tired of it, and each repeat is just as deep feeling as that first. Added straight to my "need to buy this" list! Such a wonderful hauntingly sad song and yet so full of rejoicing as he sings "I'm coming home!" Beautiful and epic!
