The Empty Hourglass
Architects Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every moment is dead to me

Do you remember?
Because I can't forget
The saddest story, of all that ever was, or will be
Laid out before me
A living heart attack
Play it back, play it back

Take my eyes, I cannot see sense
Past and future tense
Every moment is dead to me
Safe and sound, anywhere but here
I see it crystal clear, but it means nothing to me
It means nothing to me
It means nothing to me

Have you seen a future, filled with regret?
Breathe and count to ten
Start over again
You want to run away
Just let yourself decay
A living heart attack
Play it back, play it back

The empty hourglass
We're going nowhere fast
There's no more time to kill
If time is standing still

Take my eyes, I cannot see sense
Past and future tense
Every moment is dead to me
Safe and sound, anywhere but here
I see it crystal clear, but it means nothing to me
It means nothing to me
It means nothing to me

Play it back, play it back
Over and over again
Over and over again

The empty hourglass
We're going nowhere fast

There's no more time to kill
If time is standing still

Overall Meaning

"The Empty Hourglass" is a song by British metalcore band Architects, written from the perspective of someone who is emotionally dead and cannot move on from their painful memories. The opening lines "Every moment is dead to me, Do you remember? Because I can't forget" suggest that the singer is haunted by memories and unable to move forward. The song goes on to describe the sadness of a lost love and the emptiness that comes with being unable to move on. The lyrics "Take my eyes, I cannot see sense, Past and future tense, Every moment is dead to me" convey a sense of loss and a feeling that time has stopped.

The chorus "The empty hourglass, We're going nowhere fast, There's no more time to kill, If time is standing still" is a poignant reminder that time waits for no one and it is important to cherish every moment. The lyrics convey a sense of desperation and futility in trying to hold onto time that has already passed. The overall theme of the song is one of heartbreak, loss, and the struggle to move on.

That breakdown at 1:30 and the part leading up to it is a hidden gem in the album. Very powerful, very blegh at max volume.

When LF/LT came out, I did a broken hourglass tattoo on my forearm. The sand going out below through the broken glass. With the lyrics "The past is dead" from Youth Is Wasted On The Young.
And then I listened to this song when the album came out !
I had a premonition ! Architects lyrics really hit me. I have the same way of thinking as them.

Jarod Hillyard

Yeah I wanna see it too
