A Natural Woman
Aretha & Otis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Looking out on the morning rain
I used to feel so uninspired
And when I knew I had to face another day
Lord, it made me feel so tired
Before the day I met you, life was so unkind
But you're the key to my peace of mind

'Cause you make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman (woman)

When my soul was in the lost and found
You came along to claim it
I didn't know just what was wrong with me
'Til your kiss helped me name it
Now I'm no longer doubtful, of what I'm living for
And if I make you happy I don't need to do more

'Cause you make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman (woman)

Oh, baby, what you've done to me (what you've done to me)
You make me feel so good inside (good inside)
And I just want to be (want to be)
Close to you, you make me feel so alive

You make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman (woman)

You make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman (woman)

You make me feel
You make me feel

Overall Meaning

"You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman" is a song that beautifully expresses the transformative power of love and the profound effect it can have on one's emotional well-being. The lyrics describe a time when the singer was feeling uninspired and tired, facing each day with a sense of weariness. However, everything changed when they met their significant other, who became the key to their peace of mind.

The song delves into the feelings of emptiness and uncertainty that the singer experienced before encountering this love. Their soul was lost and in need of being claimed, and it was through the love and affection of their partner that they were able to discover what was missing. The singer acknowledges that they did not know what was wrong with them until their partner's kiss helped them identify the emptiness and longing within.

With the newfound love and companionship, doubt and uncertainty disappeared from the singer's life. They no longer question the purpose of their existence and simply desire to make their partner happy. The love they share brings them a deep sense of contentment, and their partner's presence makes them feel alive and whole.

Overall, the lyrics highlight the transformation that love can bring, how it can rejuvenate and uplift the spirit, and make one feel like their true self.

A force of nature. A work of genius. A gift from the heavens. Aretha Franklin’s voice is all that and more, which is why she remains the unchallenged Queen, years after her final bow. Her singing is the most magnificent sound to emerge from America — more universal than Coltrane’s horn, bolder than Hendrix’s guitar. She blew up worldwide with her 1967 hit “Respect,” claiming her throne as the greatest pop, rock, or soul singer ever. As Mary J. Blige told Rolling Stone, “She is the reason why women want to sing.”

Aretha could express jubilation, as heard in her gospel doc Amazing Grace. She could summon the deepest heartbreak, in ballads like “Ain’t No Way.” Her artistry is the greatest achievement of American music, if not American history. But her voice is the crossroads where all different musical traditions meet, from gospel to funk to rock to the blues. As she said, “I guess you could say I do a lot of traveling with my voice.”

She grew up as Detroit gospel royalty, getting her lessons in the church from Mahalia Jackson. At first, her label tried to mold her into a slick lounge singer, but she quit the crossover game, after meeting another young outsider on the label whose voice didn’t fit the pop mold: Bob Dylan. As she told writer Gerri Hirshey, “Neither of us was what you call — ah — mainstream.”

Aretha went to Muscle Shoals and became Lady Soul, creating her own raw, intense R&B sound. She forced the mainstream to cross over to her, changing the way music sounded ever since, all over the world. Her genius has taken so many forms: 1970s gospel, 1980s glam-disco, her collabos with disciples like Whitney Houston and Lauryn Hill. Or the night she stole the Grammys, singing “Nessun Dorma” without a rehearsal.

But whatever she sang, she claimed it as her own. And as long as you live, you’ll never hear anything like Aretha Franklin. That’s why her voice still goes

The entrance. The purse. The fur. The piano. The vocals. She made ME feel like a natural woman and I'm a man.

I love that Carole King’s going crazy because she’s singing her song with all the emotion it deserves!

@donjones4719

Carole was in transports of joy and beyond to have Aretha sing this - and do a rendition for the ages.

@joanneolive7128

She wrote it for Aretha.

@EPA18

She's going crazy because she's an airhead. A talented airhead, but an hippy-dippy airhead nonetheless. Just read her autobiography, it's quite apparent.
