The dock of the bay
Aretha & Otis Lyrics

I'll be sittin' when the evenin' comes
Watchin' the ships roll in
Then I watch 'em roll away again
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin' the tide, roll away
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
I left my home in Georgia
And I headed for the Frisco Bay
'Cause I've got nothin' to live for
Looks like nothin's gonna come my way, so
I'm just come sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin' the tide roll away
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay, wastin' time
Looks like nothin's gonna change
Everything seems to stay the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same
I'm sittin' here restin' my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
This two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home
Now I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin' the tide roll away
Sittin' on the dock of the bay
I'm wastin' time
The lyrics to "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" by Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding tell the story of a person who is feeling lost, lonely, and disconnected from the world around them. The lyrics describe the singer sitting by the bay, watching the ships come and go, and feeling like they have nothing to live for. This sense of aimlessness is captured in the repetition of the line "wastin' time," highlighting the emptiness and stagnation the singer feels in their life.
The song conveys a sense of resignation and acceptance of their current circumstances. The singer left their home in Georgia for the Frisco Bay seeking something, but it seems like nothing is going to change for them. Despite feeling pressured by society to conform and change, the singer chooses to remain true to themselves and stay the same. This inner turmoil and struggle with identity and purpose is reflected in the lyrics, capturing a sense of inner conflict and frustration.
The repetition of the imagery of watching the tide roll away symbolizes the passage of time and the transience of life. The singer reflects on the futility of trying to change their situation, feeling as though everything around them remains the same. The feeling of being lost and displaced is further emphasized through the reference to loneliness and the long distance the singer has traveled to find solace and a sense of belonging by the dock of the bay.
Ultimately, the song captures a poignant moment of introspection and contemplation, as the singer grapples with feelings of isolation and disillusionment. The serene setting of the bay juxtaposed with the singer's internal struggle creates a haunting atmosphere that speaks to the universal experience of feeling adrift in life. "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" is a powerful and introspective piece that conveys the complexity of human emotions and the search for meaning and connection in a seemingly indifferent world.

This song was finished up in the studio just 3 days before Redding was killed in a plane crash. What a parting gift from the king of soul.

It was my junior year in college. I had just signed on the dotted line to commit myself to Navy flight school and six years of active duty, right at the height of the Vietnam war. I signed the contract with the Navy recruiter while in the student center at college. After we shook hands, I walked away and sat down at a table alone. Now, I have to go home and tell my parents what I have done. This song came on the jukebox. It was September 14, 1968
