Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chain, chain, chain
(Chain, chain, chain)
Chain, chain, chain
(Chain, chain, chain)
Chain, chain, chain
(Chain, chain, chain)
Chain of fools
For five long years
I thought you were my man
But I found out
I'm just a link in your chain

You got me where you want me
I ain't nothin' but your fool
You treated me mean
Oh, you treated me cruel

Chain, chain, chain
(Chain, chain, chain)
Chain of fools

Every chain has got a weak link
I might be weak, yeah
But I'll give you strength
Oh, hey

You told me to leave you alone
My father said, "Come on home"
My doctor said, "Take it easy"
Oh, but your lovin' is much too strong
I'm added to your

Chain, chain, chain
(Chain, chain, chain)
Chain, chain, chain
(Chain, chain, chain)
Chain, chain, chai-i-in
(Chain, chain, chain)
Chain of fools, oh

One of these mornings
The chain is gonna break
But up until the day
I'm gonna take all I can take, oh yeah

Chain, chain, chain
(Chain, chain, chain)
Chain, chain, chain
(Chain, chain, chain)
Chain, chain, chai-i-in
(Chain, chain, chain)
Chain of fools, oh

Chain, chain, chai-i-in
Chain, chain, chain, oh

Chain, chain, chai-i-in
Chain of fools, oh

Overall Meaning

In Aretha Franklin's hit song "Chain of Fools", the singer speaks about being in a relationship with a man who has treated her poorly. She expresses how she was under the impression that this man was her partner for five years, but instead, she was just a link in his chain. Aretha then sings about how he has control over her as she is nothing but his fool. She explains how every chain has a weak link, which could be her, but she will also give him strength. Despite warnings from her father and doctor, she is unable to leave him as his love is too strong, and she ends the song by stating that one of these mornings the chain is going to break, but until that day comes, she will take all she can take.

After watching a few of Aretha’s duets with other artists, this is by far my favourite . Mariah was very respectful but still held her own. She hit F5’s just like Aretha. They both had a good ear for each other. Can we stop with the comparisons and just appreciate this? It’s a DUET and they sounded AMAZING together.

@ce7768

Aretha told her to go ahead so many times. She was being so respectful she didn't wanna overstep. This was such a legendary performance..

@mitnosnah4134

She couldn’t her voice wasn’t great in this year. Celine went for it thought fair play

@newtonnguyen5803

She was so nervous due to lack of rehearsal, you can tell by the look in her eyes.

@jessiejvocal_5810

@@mitnosnah4134But we All know that Mariah wasn't really have the ability to hold really long high belt.. but she actually did a great job that she can hit F#5 on that night.

@aqvamaninc.8151

And maybe she was little overwhelmed, just imagine to have Aretha performing with all her power and energy in front of you. Jesus My God! ✨

@cdnry0020

2:33 Mariah's musicality really stands out, her vocal runs go well with the beat

@scotte3103

Exactly. Beyond being a supreme vocal talent and gifted songwriter, she has a great intuition for playing within a melody.

@julianm1194

At 2:33 is one of my best duet vocals of all time. The slickness and agility in Mariah riff and her tone matched with Aretha's big rapsy gospel belt it amazing!🙏

@spotsevigne2549

Mariah's versatility as a vocalist and composer is fucking insane. she can do soul, rnb, gospel, hip-hop, jazz, reggae, house records and many more and almost all genres in music
