Dr. Feelgood
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't want nobody
Always
Sittin' around me and my man
I don't want nobody
Always
Sittin' right there
Lookin' at me and that man
Be it my mother, my brother or my sister
Would you believe, I'll get up, put on some clothes
Go out and help you find somebody for dissolving that pain
Yes, I will

Now I don't mind company
Because company's alright with me
Every once in a while
Yes it is
I tell you, I don't mind company
Because company's alright with me
Every once in a while
Yeah
But oh, when me and that man get to lovin'
I tell you girls
I dig you but I just don't have time
To sit and chit and sit and chit-chat and smile

Don't send me no doctor
Fillin' me up with all of those pills
I got me a man named Doctor Feelgood
And oh, yeah, that man takes care of all o' my pains and my ills
His name is
Doctor Feelgood in the mornin'
And taking care of business
Is really this man's gain
And after one visit to Doctor Feelgood
You'll understand why Feelgood is his name

Oh, yeah, oh good God almighty
The man sure makes me feel real, good

Overall Meaning

In Aretha Franklin’s song Dr. Feelgood, she is rejecting the idea of anyone always sitting around her and her man. This is seen in the first verse where she states, “I don't want nobody always sittin' around me and my man/I don't want nobody always sittin' right there lookin' at me and that man/Be it my mother, my brother or my sister would you believe." She then goes on to explain that if needed, she would get up and help to find someone to help dissolve their pain. The second verse shows how she doesn't mind some company but is not willing to entertain any when she’s in the mood for love. Aretha then goes on to explain how she has a man named Doctor Feelgood who takes care of all her pains and ills. She tells the listener not to send her any other doctor who will fill her up with “all of those pills”.

The song is about a woman who is in love with a man, but is sick of having people always sitting around them. She wants to have some time alone with her man and doesn't want anyone around to see them while they are intimate. She is not just tired of having people around her man but is also done with doctors who give her pills to care for her pain. The only doctor she needs is her lover, Doctor Feelgood, because he can take care of all her pains and ails. The interesting part of the song is how Aretha rejects the standard notion of medicine and medicine men, and instead embraces love and intimacy with her partner as the better way of caring for her needs.
