My Cup Runneth Over
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes in the morning, when shadows are deep,
I lie here beside you, just watching you sleep,
And sometimes I whisper, what I`m thinking of,
My cup runneth over with love . . .

Sometimes in the evening, when you do not see,
I study the small things, you do constantly,
I memorize moments, that I`m fondest of,
My cup runneth over with love . . .

In only a moment, we both will be old,
We won`t even notice the world turning cold.
And so, in this moment, with sunlight above,
My cup runneth over with love . . .

With love . . .

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song "Sometimes in the morning, when shadows are deep, I lie here beside you, just watching you sleep" suggest a peaceful and content moment in a romantic relationship. The singer admits to enjoying just being present and observing their partner in this vulnerable state, which highlights a level of trust and intimacy. The line "sometimes I whisper, what I'm thinking of" reveals that the singer is expressing their true feelings and thoughts, which again emphasizes the trust and open communication in the relationship.

The next verse continues to showcase the singer's appreciation of their partner through the line "I study the small things, you do constantly." This suggests a level of attentiveness and care, which is also reflected in the desire to "memorize moments" that they are fondest of. The repetition of the phrase "my cup runneth over with love" is a Biblical reference to Psalm 23, which speaks of abundance and gratitude. Through this repetition, the singer emphasizes that their love is overflowing and endless.

The final verse acknowledges the inevitability of aging and the idea that time passes quickly. The lines "We won't even notice the world turning cold. And so, in this moment, with sunlight above" suggests a sense of urgency to appreciate the present moment and savor the love that they currently have. The song ends with a final repetition of "my cup runneth over with love," solidifying the idea that love is boundless and a source of great joy and happiness.

The confidence she exudes when she sings and plays is awe-inspiring...there will never be another ARETHA !!!

Not ever.....not on her level.

Samuel. Stinson.

Her techniques in her passing chords are some of the best. I can tell her comfort/confident zone is playing a piano onstage, like MJ Dancing on stage.

Baby Aretha knows she can run those keys across the piano...! I love , love ,love it when she plays and sings!
