Pianoman
Ari Koivunen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin
He says, son, can you play me a memory?
I'm not really sure how it goes
But its sad and its sweet and I knew it complete
La la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, were all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
Now john at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And hes quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be
He says, bill, I believe this is killing me.
As the smile ran away from his face
Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place
Oh, la la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da
Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And hes talkin' with davy who's still in the navy
And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But its better than drinkin' alone
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, were all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
Its a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that its me they've been comin' to see
To forget about life for a while
And the piano, it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, man, what are you doin' here?
Oh, la la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, were all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
The song "Piano Man" by Ari Koivunen is a narrative portrait of a piano player in a bar who observes the various people around him as they seek solace in music and alcohol. The first stanza introduces the old man next to him who seeks to relive a memory from his younger days, while the second introduces John, a bartender who hates his job, and Paul, a novelist who's never had time for love. The third stanza describes a waitress who engages in politics, and businessmen who bond over a drink called loneliness. The chorus repeats, urging the piano man to sing them a song as they are in the mood for a melody that will make them feel alright. The last stanza reveals that despite the sadness and loneliness depicted in the song, the bar is thriving, and the piano man is happy to play his carnival-like music while the crowd enjoys their night.
The lyrics of "Piano Man" convey a sense of communal comfort in the face of life's uncertainties, achieved through the shared experience of music and friendship. The singer's perspective is observational, making him both detached and empathetic to the people around him. The use of repetition in the chorus ("Sing us a song, you're the piano man/Sing us a song tonight/Well, were all in the mood for a melody/And you've got us feelin' alright") adds to the sense of camaraderie, making the listener feel like they are a part of the scene.

@AiniHietala

Isosti kiitos.
@pirkko-annelilahtinen2020
Iso kiitos Ari.
@pirkko-annelilahtinen2020
